Discussion Questions -

1. At the beginning of the book we see how difficult it is for people with disabilities to do things that many people take for granted. Has this ever happened to you? If not how do you think you would handle it?

2. Would you want to live in an underwater world? Explain why / why not.

3. Will this book change the way you look at fish (You will all know the part I am talking about when you get to it lol)

4. This is a very unusual take on the whole mermaid mythology. How did it compare to what you have read before/ what you expected in a mermaid based tale (tail? hee hee hee) ?

Discussion Questions - My Answers

1. At the beginning of the book we see how difficult it is for people with disabilities to do things that many people take for granted. Has this ever happened to you? If not how do you think you would handle it?

I actually spend quite a lot of time in a wheelchair ... not because I can't walk but because the combination of conditions I have make walking any distance exhausting. I am also prone to random blackouts so sitting is generally better for places such as the mall. I don't handle being in the chair well AT ALL!!! My biggest problem is people seem to think my brain doesn't work. Often it is just talking over my head to whoever is pushing me but sales people can be stupid. One store I was trying on shoes and having told the lady my size (after she asked my mother) she left us with the shoes while I tried them on. THEN she came back and asked MY MUM if they were comfy??? I was fuming and answered that even if they had been perfect I wouldn't have purchased them BECAUSE of her attitude. Oh yes I made a scene. Was I proud of myself .. nope ... but I don't always think before I speak. Worst part was I honestly don't think she knew what she had done wrong :(

2. Would you want to live in an underwater world? Explain why / why not.

NO!! Absolutely in no way, at all, ever!!! I HATE water being on my head. i don't even like the shower being in my face. I have never understood the mermaid fascination ..... although it is one of my daughters dreams. She is 14 now and still wants to be a mermaid!!

3. Will this book change the way you look at fish (You will all know the part I am talking about when you get to it lol)

That scene made me laugh out loud. I don't eat fish anyway (allergies) but if I did I think that may have put me off for life although it was hilarious to read. I guess I have never thought much about what they eat underwater ....

4. This is a very unusual take on the whole mermaid mythology. How did it compare to what you have read before/ what you expected in a mermaid based tale (tail? hee hee hee) ?

I have not read many (I am trying to think if I have actually read any) books where this sort of world takes center stage so I didn't really have many expectations going in. I did really like the unusual take on the mythology and thought that her being raised as human was genius!!

Can't wait to hear what everyone else thinks :D V""V

I personally haven't spent time in a wheelchair, but my husband has Lupus and has been in a wheelchair repeatedly, due to intermittent paralysis. I think the one thing he wanted most from others is to treat him no differently whether he's in a wheelchair or not. My husband is amazing! He's able to laugh and joke around about his challenges--that's not to say he doesn't have times when he's down--but he's always tried not to let his physical condition change him. I truly love and admire him for that.

2. Would you want to live in an underwater world? Explain why / why not.

I would love to be able to visit an underwater world. But I don't think I'd want to stay. There are too many things I'd miss on dry land. I guess I would love to have the best of both worlds.

3. Will this book change the way you look at fish (You will all know the part I am talking about when you get to it lol)

I was introduced to sushi when I went to college in Hawaii--and I love it. I've never eaten a live--or nearly--live fish, but I bet it wouldn't taste too bad--if you can get over the fact it was swimming one minute and you're eating it the next.

4. This is a very unusual take on the whole mermaid mythology. How did it compare to what you have read before/ what you expected in a mermaid based tale (tail? hee hee hee) ?

I've personally never read a mermaid book before, nor will I. I don't want anything to change my view of the underwater world. I really want to keep my mermaid stories fresh and new.

I personally don't have any disabilities, but I watch my daughter, who has several, thrive despite her challenges, and I am so proud.

2. Would you want to live in an underwater world? Explain why / why not.

For a short time, as long as I could breathe underwater. I have slight claustrophobia. I'm not found of snorkels, and I don't think I would ever scuba dive.

3. Will this book change the way you look at fish (You will all know the part I am talking about when you get to it lol)

Not really. I adore sushi. It makes sense that underwater creatures would eat their fish raw. Not like you can start a fire in water, right?

4. This is a very unusual take on the whole mermaid mythology. How did it compare to what you have read before/ what you expected in a mermaid based tale (tail? hee hee hee) ?

I've read "Of Poseidon" (The Syrena Legacy) and Wake (A Watersong Novel). Both have younger main characters and a more immature feel to them. I think Holly's world building is more complete as well. The Syrena Legacy also introduces conflict between the gods and their creations, but Holly incorporates even more mythology into her story, as well as components that are uniquely her imaginings.

Heather | 6 comments 1. I have never been in a wheelchair, but I did have a stroke which temporarily left me with a disability. It was so frustrating because at times, I couldn't do things I normally did like hold a pencil or type on my laptop. My hands wouldn't work and it was difficult to walk. I only had to deal with that temporarily, so I can only imagine how difficult it would be to have to work so hard to do everyday tasks all of the time. I think it would be so frustrating. I admire anyone that can deal with that daily and not give up.

2. I would not want to live in an underwater world. I am not a huge fan of the water. I like to look at it and I like to sit by the ocean and read, but I do not like swimming.

3. I am allergic to almost any food that comes from the water. Even if I was not allergic, I am not sure that I could eat raw fish!

4. I've only read one mermaid type series and that was The Watersong Series. I thought the characters in this book were more mature and interesting. I really enjoyed learning about Triton and Poseidon and the conflicts that arose.

Carol Savoy-fox | 1 comments I myself have never spent time in a wheelchair, however I have cousin who became paralyzed in a car accident and I know of the struggles he had to indure. I've nearly drowned when I was young so I'm not a fan of water. I have made sure all my children are excellent swimmers, but you won't get me past the 4 foot in a swimming pool and I refuse to go on any boat. Lol! I live in western Kansas for a reason, there's very few rivers or lakes here :-) When I was little I lived by a river, So we ate fish very often. I don't eat fish now and I have never and don't plan on eating raw fish. Being such a water hater, I don't read many book that are based on water events. I've tried to read them, but I just can't get into them :-(

Tamara Grantham (tgrantham) | 1 comments 1. I spent time on crutches when I was in 2nd grade. I hated it. I'd always thought it would be so much fun to use crutches, but then I quickly found out how limiting it was. Luckily I only spent a few weeks with them, but it made me more aware of how difficult day-to-day chores become.
2. I love the water. I would definitely spend time there--can't say I would live there. I lived on Galveston Island (Texas) for four years and I'm moving back this summer. Living near the water feels like home to me, and I feel suffocated if I'm not close to it. I think Holly Kelly created a beautiful undersea world. I loved the homes and the castles. I loved the way she used sharks. Basically I just loved the whole book!
