SparksofEmber | 957 comments I'm curious if there are any YA (preferably) or Adult Fiction books out there that are very loosely based on the story of The Nutcracker & the Mouse King? It doesn't have to have a literal nutcracker - just something inspired by Hoffman's original story. Modernized retellings, that sort of thing.

This link has a list of children adaptations of the nutcracker. Some of them may be young adult.

SparksofEmber | 957 comments Hmm, A Nutty Nutcracker Christmas is close to what I am looking for. All the others look like retellings of the classic. I'm wanting YA fantasy romance retellings -
like Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine Ella Enchanted is based on Cinderella,
Beastly (Beastly, #1) by Alex Flinn Beastly is based on Beauty & the Beast,
The Healer's Apprentice by Melanie Dickerson the Healer's Apprentice is based on Sleeping Beauty...

SparksofEmber | 957 comments That is exactly the type of book I am looking for, Rainbowheart! Thank you!! Weird that they seem to be so rare when other adaptations are so popular.

Not-Mary | 51 comments The Nutcracker Bleeds but it's quite dark for a retelling
