When I lived in Texas everyone called soda, coke, no matter what. when I visited my aunt in Houston, her friend asked me, what flavored soda water I wanted.(coke flavor, sprite flavor, orange flavor)

message 103: by Amber (new)

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) | 694 comments Yeah we call it coke here in TN too. ^_^

Autumn (autumnmemory80) I went to Montana and ordered a coke, and then they gave me a Coke. I wanted Sprite, but they did not ask what kind of coke I wanted. I learned then the difference; but to me all sodas are cokes, but not all cokes are Coke. I also had to be careful because at McDonalds when I would order a Sprite, they would always give me fries. Gotta love that southern twang!

message 112: by Ter'e (new)

Ter'e Crow Lindsay (terecrow) | 798 comments I like John's idea of having apple pie, better!!!! With some vanilla bean ice cream, freshly churned. Mmmmmmmmm with just a hint of cinnamon!
Thanks John.

Hey Dips........if it is 3 a.m. In FL........what time is it in Kolkata?

When I was in basic training with the USAF, we had a deep southern boy as the DI. We also had a recruit named Farr. The first week in basic we had fire drills in the barracks. One night, around midnight,
we heard the DI yelling Fire! Fire!. So we immedately scrambled out of the barracks to the parking lot. The DI comes fuming out of the barraks,
wondering why his squad is standing around the paking in our bvds in the middle of the night. We told him he yelled Fire!. He blew his top. He wasn't yelling Fire! He was yelling at recruit FARR!

message 114: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Dougherty (goodreadscomvictoria_dougherty) | 60 comments I also love the way Southerners say lawyer. It's either law-yer - emphasis on the law. Or pronounced liar. I kind of like the latter (though I've got nothing against lawyers. I just think it's funny).

I say far for fire. Shoot far!

message 116: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (diaze) When were you in the USAF? I served from 85-93.

message 117: by John (new)

John (jkbrown2) Some were offended, but as a Southern I still thought this scene in Gettysburg was funny. A Union solder asks a Confederate prisoner what the South is fighting for. The Reb replies, "We are fighting for our Rats!" The Union soldier is totally dumbfounded. "You're fighting for rats?" The Reb replies, "Yes, our Constitutional Rats (Rights)." TGIF Yall!

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments Hey, I grew up in Tennessee and can talk southern with the best of y'all!
@ Ter'e: The best way to fix gri-its is to cook them with salt and butter and serve it up in a bowl with a soft-boiled egg, crumbled bacon and shredded cheddar on top. YUM!!!
Also @ Ter'e: Where in TN did you live? My home was Oak Ridge.
@ Lorrea and Jessica: I had a college roommate from Midland, TX.
@ Dips: My niece recently married a wonderful man from India. They honeymooned in India and she had a wonderful time!
@ Malina: I've been fortunate enough to have traveled to Boston on numerous occasions for work conferences. Great restaurants; especially love the North Inn (my father is Italian). What's your favorite restaurant?
I now live in Rochester, MN.

Minnesota Chris

Hey Girl,
Mmmmmmm let's have some Cheese Grits instead. I have my grits shipped in from GA. Honey, we LOVE grits!!!!

Know Oak Ridge fairly well. Well, lets say........we know Big Ed's Pizza. That counts right? Nuthin like a pitcher of ice cold beer and Big Ed's pizza.

David is from LaFollette..........right up the road from you. I worked for the Woodson's. Beautiful area.......but a tough area for a Californian to live. Took me forever to understand what people were doing, when they would lift their finger for you. David would say...."Honey, they're speaking"... LOL. I didn't understand it was a good thing. I about fainted the first time a clerk came into my dressing room, at Miller's, to help fit me for a dress. Different area, that East Tennessee.

Just got finished having delicious chicken enchiladas and black beans. I make marvellous salsa.......
Again, my CA roots. Love the Mex food in TX as well.........but I prefer CA style. Man, I should have made some margs.........but I was too tired. I painted all day over at my sons. Such a good mommy.

message 126: by Christine (new)

Christine (clt04) | 4838 comments @Ter'e: Yes, Big Ed's Pizza is a landmark spot in O.R. We used to go there after our softball games when I was a teenager. Had a chance to go back there in July 2011 and of course a trip to Big Ed's was in order! How cool that you know my hometown. And you are right about the clerks at Millers!

I briefly visited Dallas many years ago. My most vivid memories are the great Tex Mex ( better than Mexican food in Mexico IMO) and the fact that if you drove only 75 mph, you would be rear ended in a second!

I live in the Pacific Northwest and write mystery/suspense novels set here, too. It is an incredibly beautiful place -- I was out hiking in the Columbia Gorge yesterday, doing some research for a new book, and had to stop and admire that beauty! If you like to travel vicariously :), I often post photos of the Northwest on my website/blog.
