This is what I know about Staunton, VA: Part of its downtown fell into a sinkhole in the early 20th century. And that--is this correct?--the famous Robin and Linda Williams (singers) live there. :)
I know Virginia Beach well. I used to live in Norfolk and had some personal training clients at the Beach.

Probably just a matter of local definition because all the local TV and radio stations here define tri-state as I did. They reach PA, but only Philly.
Maybe they're just being consistent with the MTA, who knows? That's consistent with only the bottom of Conn being considered as part of the tri-state area here (the rest is NE).
We lived a few decades in the Boston area, so New England was an accepted term, but I always wondered why upstate NY wasn't considered part of NE too because it's so similar.
Many people here just consider Delaware as a few minutes of heavy tolls on the way to Baltimore and DC. LOL.
I've learned not to look for logic in these things.

I guess NJ is privileged, belonging to both? LOL.
Bottom line: My Detective Castilblanco, who lives in Queens, thinks tri-state means Conn, NY, and NJ, while a colleague in Philly thinks it means PA, NJ, and Del. That implies it should be defined once in each book so the reader's not confused.
I think I'm safe, though, because most of my books in the crime fiction mystery and thriller genres are mostly in first person, that person being Mr. C. Good point, though.
All the best,
Steve

I share your fascination with the variety here. You've just added to it!
Love the UK moniker. The sun never sets on the British Empire. How do Brits see the Scots' move toward independence? Is the movement to bail out of the EU taking hold? I'm reading a bio of Churchill--it's interesting how he tried to pull Valera into the allied fold, without much success, I might add.
I've always been fascinated by the UK and read many authors from there as a result. Ian Rankin (a Scot) might be the most famous on my list, but I reviewed a charming mystery from a new indie writer for Bookpleasures about the "little people" in Ireland. I'm currently reading a mystery set in London too (yeah, I read books in parallel). To go beyond books, Dylan Thomas (Welsh) is my favorite poet and Oscar Wilde (Irish/English) my favorite dramatist.
My first wife (Colombian) had a conference in Sheffield once but I couldn't accompany her. My second wife and I are saving up for a trip to England and Scotland (we already toured Ireland).
On the writing side, some of my novels are set overseas. I think it's hard to break into your market, though--there are so many good writers over there.

I guess we take where we come from for granted. Everything seems more exotic and interesting when it's not home. Tis a colorful, interesting fascinating world and I'm all for differences.

That's one advantage for audio books I guess (but I don't "write" them). Another is using them on long commutes (I work from home now). But they're a growing media in the book business.
I second your interest in accents. Many people love to listen to them. Once in Bogota' I took a Colombian to lunch who had studied in the U.S. and knew English very well. Over sancocho, we discussed our pasts. He was surprised to hear I was from California. "I would have guessed you were from Kansas." He had a good ear--my parents were from Kansas!

We were in Halifax last fall, following the leaves southward. Beautiful place.
As you know, Boston and Halifax are linked by history (we lived in the Boston area for a couple of decades).
80% of my book publishing gang is from Canada.
And yes, thank you for cheering on the American women in soccer. Canadians made them feel like they were always playing for a home crowd!

I might be mistaken, but I thought there was a huge fire in Halifax back in the 19th century, and Boston sent firefighters, medical teams, and supplies to help out. Halifax helped out after the Marathon bombings. Maybe the Tea Party is another link, though.
And we always appreciated the Christmas tree! LOL.
Feeling like the home team might be overrated, but I think it provides an edge--a good feeling, at least.
Canada has some good writing contests. Unlike the U.S., many of them are free, but, as a Yank, I can't enter...sigh.... I prefer Louise Penny over her American competition--her cerebral Inspector Gamache is quite a guy.

I felt those ties when we visited Halifax and told people we used to live in the Boston area. In hard times, people pull together, and good karma is spread all around.
Take care.

I'm seeing this is quite an international group now. Welcome! We're going Around the World in Eighty Posts!
Goodreads has many attractions, but the "international aspect" is one of them. Just shows that reading and readers dissolve all borders to celebrate this great, big, wonderful world.
Sorry for the exuberance--I had an extra mug of java today because I plan to hit some editing tasks with a sledge hammer.

Wow! That's crazy. My grandmother was born in Kenya before shifting to Bombay. I was born in Bombay but I've lived in Bahrain my whole life. Such a small world. Never thought I'd meet someone on here from Bahrain.
My pleasure, I enjoy making new friends. Thank you for the invite!
