Surprised to see that no one has commented on this book so far. After reading many praiseworthy reviews, I finally got around reading this and finished it last night.

The characters really evolved as the story went on, especially the twins. The struggles all of them went through mentally and the pain they carry for the rest of their lives, is really heart-breaking. A consequence of decisions made at times when we are weak. I think each reader can find something to relate to.

(view spoiler)[ I'm still wondering why Kweku actually left the family. I realize that he was a proud man and that through an unfortunate incident, he lost his job and hid that fact for almost a year from his family. Why couldn't he come clean to his wife? Was he scared with the prospect of having to return all of them back to Africa? That he would rob his children from opportunity, the same way Fola felt? With his good education and stellar career, why couldn't he find another job? Maybe move, as suggested by his lawyer, to another US state? (hide spoiler)]

Loved this book. Style was a little choppy, but a great read otherwise.
