Ahh, April! Such an exciting month. It's spring, it's my birthday... and a friend is releasing a new book! Party time!

You read that right. One of our own is releasing a new book in April--Elisabeth Grace Foley is releasing The Mrs. Meade Mysteries, Volume I. Now let me tell you, I've read the first two Mrs. Meade mysteries (The Silver Shawl: A Mrs. Meade Mystery & The Parting Glass: A Mrs. Meade Mystery), and they are delightful little comfort reads. Highly recommended. So highly, in fact, that we're hosting a Sprint in honor of them!

Here's the rules. During the month of April, you will receive one entry into the giveaway for every mystery you read. You will receive TWO entries for every historical mystery you read. You will receive THREE entries for every Mrs. Meade mystery you read. There is no restriction on length or reading level, but graphic novels and comic books don't count.

The prize? A paperback edition of Vol.1 of the Mrs. Meade Mysteries, of course!

This Sprint runs through April. You must finish reading books by midnight local time on April 30th for the books to be eligible for the contest. You must post a list of all your entries by midnight local time May 1st to be included in the giveaway. (Please indicate on your list which mysteries are historical.)

Person with the most entries wins, you don't have to outread me in the process, yada yada and the usual.

So to all you people who wanted a mystery Sprint... let's get this party started!

Jonathan Lovelace (kingjon) | 89 comments Question: How do mysteries that weren't "historical" when they were written but are now quite dated count? (I'm thinking primarily of Dick Francis, but I know there are others too.)

message 3: by Faith (new)

Faith (faithblum) | 173 comments *starts figuring out if she can squeeze some mysteries into her already tight reading schedule* 30 second pause *decides she will try at the very least* I have something like 30-40 mystery books on my Kindle, so I should be able to read at least one this month, right? In between the ARC book I am reading, and the book I said I would review this month, and work, and writing my own book, and... :P I CAN do this! Really. All I have to do now is convince myself that it is possible.

Elisabeth Jonathan wrote: "Question: How do mysteries that weren't "historical" when they were written but are now quite dated count? (I'm thinking primarily of Dick Francis, but I know there are others too.)"

Good question...one that always comes up sooner or later, I guess. I know I read many more older mysteries than I do historical ones by contemporary authors.

For the purposes of this Sprint, why not just define "historical" as something set at least 20 years before its publication? What do you think, Aubrey?

message 5: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments Fun! I have more mysteries than I can count on to-read...should be something I can participate in!

message 6: by [deleted user] (new)

For the purposes of this Sprint, since you are our gracious host, we will go with that definition, Elisabeth. :)

Ahh, I should know better than to start threads late at night--I forgot some rules! Original post updated accordingly.

message 7: by Katie (new)

Katie Daniels | 242 comments And here I already read my Ellery Queen book! Hmph. I do have some kind of murder anthology sitting on my bookshelf here...

message 8: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 51 comments I've been meaning to read some more Mandie boks. I guess this is a perfect opportunity. And we do have all 39 Trixie Belden books in the house, which I haven't read in several years. I have some mysteries to solve . . . or not. I never was very good at figuring out Encyclopedia Brown mysteries, despite wanting to be a detective.

message 9: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments Tee hee...just brought home some mysteries from work...when mass market books are due out, the publishers just want the covers back, so we get to take a few home each week. So guess what I picked?!

message 10: by J. (new)

J. Pennington (jgracetheauthor) | 74 comments Aww. I read a mystery just last month! I must find more. :)

message 11: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments One mystery down. Will add it as read later when I have time.

message 12: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments And it was a historical mystery.

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

That's the spirit, Hannah! :D

message 14: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth If you're looking for mystery-reading ideas, check out my guest post at Rachel Heffington's blog on eight of my favorite rare or obscure mysteries!

I also did a list of my top ten favorite Agatha Christie novels a few months ago: http://www.thesecondsentence.blogspot...

Jedi Knight Siri (tahiriveila) | 14 comments My mystery list so far:

Nancy Drew - The Hidden Staircase
The Boxcar Children

Pending school assignments, I will read more mysteries before the end of the month.

message 16: by J. (new)

J. Pennington (jgracetheauthor) | 74 comments I've read two historical mysteries so far this month. :)

message 17: by Faith (last edited Apr 17, 2014 10:44AM) (new)

Faith (faithblum) | 173 comments I have read two Mrs. Meade mysteries and one historical mystery so far.

message 18: by Faith (new)

Faith (faithblum) | 173 comments I finished another historical mystery, The Valley of Fear by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Remember that I'm gonna make y'all post a final list with titles at the end of the month to validate your entries. ;)

message 20: by Faith (new)

Faith (faithblum) | 173 comments I know. I will. I'm just listing them here so that I can hopefully remember to do it. :P

message 21: by Morgan (new)

Morgan | 51 comments Are we supposed to list our mysteries now? I read two historical ones:
Mandie and the Dangerous Imposters
Mandie and the Schoolhouse's Secret

message 22: by Faith (new)

Faith (faithblum) | 173 comments Oh dear! I missed the deadline. :( I thought I had until today to list all of mine. Just in case Aubrey becomes lenient, I shall list them. I haven't read anymore than what I have already mentioned above, so this is just the list with the titles.

All 4 are Historical Mysteries and two of those are Mrs. Meade mysteries.
"Murder for Greenhorns" by Robert Kresge
"The Valley of Fear" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
"The Parting Glass" by Elisabeth Grace Foley
"The Oldest Flame" by Elisabeth Grace Foley

message 23: by J. (new)

J. Pennington (jgracetheauthor) | 74 comments I listed mine awhile back, but in case they got overlooked...

"The Beekkeeper's Apprentice"
"A Monstrous Regiment of Women"
both by Laurie R. King

message 24: by Hannah (last edited May 02, 2014 05:31PM) (new)

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 215 comments Forgot to give the title of mine...
"Bless the Bride" by Rhys Bowen. A historical.

No others! Blame life. :(

But I already have the Mrs Meade book... ;)

message 25: by Annie (new)

Annie Hawthorne (curiouswren) I read two historical mysteries:

• The Red House Mystery (A.A. Milne)
• The Sign of the Four (Arthur Conan Doyle)

message 26: by J. (new)

J. Pennington (jgracetheauthor) | 74 comments (Mine are both historical by the way)

Isn't The Red House Mystery awesome? =D

message 27: by Annie (new)

Annie Hawthorne (curiouswren) Yes! I love it to death. :D It's one of my Comfort Reads.... which is odd considering that it's a murder mystery. O.o ;) ^_^

message 28: by Annie (new)

Annie Hawthorne (curiouswren) And aren't Anthony and Bill just too fantastic for words? ^_^ *grin*

message 29: by J. (new)

J. Pennington (jgracetheauthor) | 74 comments Anthony. <3 ;)

message 30: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth I've got to read The Red House Mystery again soon!

By the terms we agreed on for the Sprint, though, it's not historical, since it was set at the time Milne wrote it. Same goes for the various Conan Doyle titles.

message 31: by Faith (new)

Faith (faithblum) | 173 comments *pokes Aubrey* When do we find out who the winner is? :D

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Sorry, ever so sorry! As I posted in the other thread, I accidentally went AWOL. Hence, I shall be lenient this time in regards to the deadline for listing entries. ;) I'll be drawing the winner tonight.

message 33: by [deleted user] (new)

Hold it, why am I blabbering about drawing the winner when this is a simple "the most reads wins" Sprint? I really have lost my mind. I blame this mysterious allergy I seem to have developed (which I am blaming on construction at work...). Well, that makes my job easier! (Now I see the large irony in Faith poking me about announcing the winner...)

Yup, since Faith had two Mrs. Meade mysteries on her list, she is definitely our winner. Since she's a historical mystery author herself, I know she'll take good care of that paperback. Well done, my dear. ^_^ Elisabeth will be shipping the prize directly to you.

Thanks for playing, everyone!

message 34: by J. (new)

J. Pennington (jgracetheauthor) | 74 comments I thought it was entries, not points?

message 35: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth So did I. But I suppose Faith had the best odds of being the winner anyway! :) I have the prize all ready and will ship it this week.

message 36: by J. (new)

J. Pennington (jgracetheauthor) | 74 comments I'm going to check with Aubrey and make sure, though. I'm not planning to give up just yet. ;)

message 37: by J. (new)

J. Pennington (jgracetheauthor) | 74 comments (Yep. The rules definitely state that it's based on entries. I texted her, so we'll see what she says. :))

message 38: by Elisabeth (new)

Elisabeth I already emailed Faith, but if Aubrey decides to do a drawing and someone else wins, I'm willing to provide a second copy. It'd just take a little while, since I'd need to order one!

message 39: by Katie (new)

Katie Daniels | 242 comments From ze rules at the top of ze page:

"During the month of April, you will receive one entry into the giveaway for every mystery you read. You will receive TWO entries for every historical mystery you read. You will receive THREE entries for every Mrs. Meade mystery you read."

And later...

"Person with the most entries wins"

message 40: by J. (new)

J. Pennington (jgracetheauthor) | 74 comments Ohh. I didn't see that. But they aren't really "entries" then, are they? *scratches head*

Just thinking how future confusion might be averted. Congratulations, Faith!

message 41: by Faith (new)

Faith (faithblum) | 173 comments That is interesting, Aubrey. :)

Good job to everybody else, by the way. And thanks for the congrats!
