Just started. Chapter 4: (view spoiler)[ Lee reminds me of Feyre at the beginning of Sarah J Maas' Court series.
So far, this is a typical YA paranormal book. We've got the poor heroine with a difficult life and strange power, dead parents, best friend who may or may not be in love with the heroine. All basic elements. I hope the story expands soon. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 8: (view spoiler)[ I'm a little disappointed with Uncle Hiram's appearance. I wish there had been more mystery over who might have killed Lee's parents. Besides, as a villain, Hiram is not exactly genius. How can he not suspect that Lee would run? (hide spoiler)]

Oh yeah. The other reason I haven't started is because the book's arriving late. I was supposed to get it 2 days ago but for some reason they sent it to the wrong city. So it's taking a while to get to me lol.

Chapter 14: (view spoiler)[ I love the historical setting. I've never read a YA book set in 1800s America, but I think the Gold Rush Era is a very interesting period.
I also like that the author doesn't shy away from demonstrating racism and violence prevalent around the time. She definitely doesn't put Americans in a pretty light for the sake of patriotism. She just shows it how it was.

Lee is surprisingly resourceful, I'm impressed. The contrast between her and Mrs Joyner is huge and favors Lee by a long shot. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 8: (view spoiler)[ I feel like this is going to be a long book which is disappointing because I usually like books in this setting. I get Lee's attachment to her home but I wish she was the type of girl that wanted to explore and see what's out there especially with her powers. It didn't take long to figure out who killed her parents. I just wish she would leave and start her journey already. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 19: (view spoiler)[ Can't tell if Lee and Jeff are going to be one of those painful one-sided best friend love situations or if they're actually going to get together. At the beginning I thought it would be the former, but so far no other eligible bachelors showed up for Lee. Painful one-sided love isn't usually in a YA book unless there's a love triangle. So I'm guessing that means Lee and Jeff will slowly fall in love! (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 11: (view spoiler)[ I'm impressed with Lee's character and her skills to outsmart those three guys. I'm impressed that her character really is more of a boy which is what most people perceive her to be. Whenever I read about a "tomboy" type of character, they usually still end up more feminine than a tomboy because they're overshadowed by teen angst and too many emotions or insecurities. Lee's not like that. She's determined to survive and she could care less of how she looks or if she's spending the whole night in the dirt. (hide spoiler)]

There may not have been much mystery around the death of Lee's parents but at least there's a mystery around her parents and Hiram. I wonder why Elizabeth married Reuben. If Elizabeth did have powers like Lee and Hiram knew about it, why did she have to marry Reuben? I'm surprised it took Hiram all this time to finally retaliate and get revenge. I get that she's supposed to meet a lot of people on her journey but they all have their own little side plots. I wish it would just focus on Lee and add in Jefferson every now and then. It's straying from the plot too much. We're more than halfway through the book and we haven't even reached California. I'm worried that the end will be rushed at this point. (hide spoiler)]

Finished! (view spoiler)[ Honestly I'm disappointed. I loved Rae Carson's Fire and Thorns trilogy. This was nowhere near as good as her first trilogy. The end does redeem it a little. I liked that Lee finally finds a family and people she can trust. I know the whole point of the book was to get to California and for Lee to find people that will stay by her side but it could have been done 100 pages earlier. There were way too many side plots and it just dragged the story. The end did feel rushed as I predicted. I found it funny that Mrs. Joyner's personality made a 360 degree shift after her husband died. I really do wonder what everyone else will think when they find out the truth about Lee's power to sense gold. (hide spoiler)]

That's okay! It's definitely not as interesting as the audiobook I'm listening to which is why it's taking me a lot longer to finish this than usual. This one is also not as interesting as her other series.
