Add Ten Words is a fun creative writing exercises journal. Inside you will find themed lists of ten words that you can add in to a passage, poem or story of any length. You don't have to use the themes if you don't want to as perhaps the words in any particular list will suggest a different path for you.

I'm relatively new at this but, apparently, I write 'chillingly realistic' dark crime and psychological thrillers.
A bit about me. I've been a martial artist, fighter, British soldier and police officer for far too many years, so I use many of my first-hand experiences as inspiration for my work. My debut ebook, Lines of Justice: Aždaja, is the first in a darkly humorous series I'm working on (the second is due out later this year) and has been getting some excellent reviews on here from readers and bloggers in the UK. Ideally, what I'd like if possible, is some reviews from readers outside the UK? I wrote the plot primarily to appeal to readers here but I'm curious to know how well both the style and story translate internationally...if that makes sense? It's available in all Amazon regions for the equivalent of 99p.

All families have secrets or skeletons in the cupboard, hidden away from view. Most of those secrets are better left undisturbed, for very good reasons. When Mister Jones agrees to deal with the Estate of a recently deceased cousin, he finds that the secrets hidden by his family are very dark indeed, and that the skeletons in this cupboard are very real – and not yet entirely dead.
Drawn once more by Fate into a world where magic and myth are all too real and danger lurks at every turn, Mister Jones confronts a past that seeks again to become the present, and to plunge his future into a rising Darkness.
Can he escape the Demon’s Reach?
When Mister Jones discovers that he has been asked to be executor of the Estate of a cousin he wasn’t aware he had, he thinks that the request is innocent, a family matter. But when he travels to his late cousin’s home, he finds that the local village is a dark place, full of mistrust of his family and with unsettling whispers of a dark past.
Indeed, his arrival is enough to spark of an attempt by the villagers to destroy part of his late cousin’s home – and the first death. The mystery deepens as another lost relative finds Mister Jones – but is she all that she seems?
His first visit to his late cousin’s house is almost his last, for Mister Jones finds first evidence of Black Magical Rituals among the effects in the house, and then discovers that a Demon still walks the grounds. The Demon makes herself known to more than just Mister Jones, and the body count rises. Joined by another relative stranger who reveals that she is his half sister, Mister Jones struggles to unravel the web of deceit and mystery and uncover the truth – only to discover that his half sister is more involved than he believed and that the plot centers around his presence, there in the house. He is to be a sacrificial victim, in a Ritual that will restore his long-lost father to life – at the expense of Mister Jones’.
Can Mister Jones’ half sister bring herself to sacrifice the brother she doesn’t know, for the father she fears?

New release free to Kindle Unlimited subscribers, otherwise 99p: The Ghost of Scarside Beck Download from Amazon at myBook.to/GhostofScarsideBeck
An understated ghostly novelette, whose initial light tone builds to a dark, and chilling, climax. A pair of newlyweds take up residence in an idyllic Cumbrian parish, but a curious carving seems to hold the key to their fates, as well as a link to the past. Just what that is, they are about to discover.

Philip’s back with a fifth collection of stories, both ‘nostalgedy’(a mixture of nostalgia and comedy) and other observational pieces in which he takes a wry look at times past and present.
Every book has to have a theme and the structure for this one came whilst he was idly munching a chocolate bar. You know that one which used to promise to help you work, rest and play? Well, this book consists of Work, Play and the Rest.
In ‘Work’ Philip joins the ranks of the employed at the beginning of the 1970s, firstly as an inept packer of plastics before moving to ‘a nice dry job with no heavy lifting’ in a dark, satanic paper mill. We learn about his struggles with punctuality, the difficulties of working in the darkness of the 3-Day-Week and why he had a real reason to be grateful for Ted Heath.
‘Play’ brings tales of a boozy holiday in Franco’s Majorca in the 1970s, a fleeting role in a ‘Look at Life’ documentary, Cilla Black, Soap Operas, an insight into the Cultural Quarter of Stoke-on-Trent and some tales from a trip to Australia.
Finally, ‘the Rest’ shovels up everything that wouldn’t fit into the first two, including a tour around a pub in the 1960s, getting a brace fitted at the dentist’s, difficulties with sanitary arrangements, why grass should be left alone, why shopping with your wife is an overrated pastime, a grumble about grammar and why it is absolutely fine to be a NIMBY. All wrapped up with the Title article, which is not for the faint-hearted.
Come and join Philip in his Slightly Odd World, you won’t regret it!

Please put my book onto you readers list or pre order on Amazon for release 14 Dec 17.
Had two 5 star reviews so far, both said that you would not have read anything like it before.
A thriller, mystery with a bit of fantasy and time travel thrown in.
Add me as a friend, buy the book, ask to review it but most of all enjoy it.
Blurb
High-flying trader Dean Harrison has it all – the London penthouse apartment; the fast car; the beautiful wife. But when the threads of Dean’s life start to unravel, they do so with alarming speed.
Following the advice of a frail stranger, Dean sets off for Welnetham Hall Hotel and is plunged into the mysterious world of Room 119 – a world where nothing makes sense. How does everyone in the hotel know his name? Why does he travel there on a train line that shut down over fifty years ago? And who is the sinister man in black who pursues him wherever he goes?
As he gradually pieces together the puzzle of Welnetham Hall, Dean is forced to re-evaluate his life and realises that nothing is more important to him than his wife and daughter. Desperate to get back to them, he vows he would lay down his life for the people he loves.
It’s a promise he may have to keep.

A new release: At Fall of Night. A supernatural slice of seasonal Victorian Gothic. Download from Amazon for 99p, or free on Kindle Unlimited at myBook.to/AtFallofNight
Blurb
Monsieur Benoit Lavarnier, toast of the Parisian art world and a man of cultured accomplishments, remains, for all of his polished veneer, a son of the Breton soil, with all that this implies with respect to his superstitious beliefs. Commissioned to paint a portrait of renowned beauty, Lady Helena Brocklington, he arrives in the autumn of 1843 not only with the accoutrements of his trade, but also with something sinister lurking in his train. He soon finds himself so smitten with his subject, and so invested in his work, that the resultant piece becomes imbued with an essence that could, perhaps, be construed as akin to a life force. Could it be, that so many decades after its completion, something beyond the paint itself endures?
An understated ghostly novelette, Victorian in sensibility and style, that immerses the reader in a tale of obsession, and terror.

Fear’s good, fear keeps you safe.
SLEEPING DOGS
(This is Eden Reid Book 3 but they're all standalone novels, you don't need to have read the first two.)

So, in that spirit, allow me to announce that Norris Goes West: A sequel to Spenser Goes North has just been released on Amazon sites across the globe (or disc if you're one of those stubborn flat earther types).
It is, I fervently hope, a standalone adventure that is also a sequel to Spenser Goes North.
A tale of do, and derring of course, it's a boy's own story of Oxford, New York, London, Charleston and, er, Liverpool. Sort of.
The blurb goes something like this:
"Norris is an urchin, a child of the streets.
Despite his current position as a servant of the Queen in an unnamed espionage organisation, he has not forgotten the years spent surviving on the mean (in a typically genteel way) streets of Oxford, dodging the constables and picking a pocket or two when the opportunity arose.
So, when other street urchins go missing from the equally mean, but far less genteel, streets of Liverpool Norris is the perfect person to go undercover and find out who is stealing children and why. The journey will take him further than he ever thought possible and bring him face to face with the most incomprehensible danger he has yet faced - girls.
NORRIS GOES WEST is a sequel to SPENSER GOES NORTH."
Actually, the blurb goes exactly like that. The cover looks like this

Exactly like this.
Thank you for your kind attention and if your attention wasn't so kind, well thank you anyway.

A disturbing tale of the supernatural in which the Victorian gothic meets folk horror.
‘Nothing good did ever come out the Dunchester Cut, nor the land thereabouts. Them as lives up at the big house might’ve thought otherwise once, but not no more. Not after what did happen.’
Welcome to rural Wiltshire in the spring of 1846.
Was it the molecatcher or the navvies who brought it back? Neither would claim it as their own, and neither would wish to. Who would? Whatever it should be, it would seem that it finds its pleasure in the riot of the chase, and in the singling out, and punishment, of its particular quarry. Available from Amazon Kindle for 99p, or free to Kindle Unlimited subscribers, via the following universal link: myBook.to/Epona

These are accounts made after the author received counselling for lifelong depression, which helped her understand why she suffered for so very long, and face the demons of what happened in her childhood and early adulthood that she never revealed or even admitted to herself. In this story, brought bravely forth because of revelations about high profile predators who thought they could get away with abuse, the author lets you into her world where from a young age she was a victim, and suffered in silence. She was never safe at home, and what made her think she'd be safe in the outside world once she'd made her escape?
To her credit these accounts are not graphic and while in some instances they are harrowing, there is a degree of humour placed between the lines and throughout the telling of a tale that is not only hers, but belongs to countless others whose voices have never been heard.
The title is a mystery until halfway through the narration. I've read it and I recommend it. Yes I'm biased but I know a good story when I read one.

My historical fiction, The Soul's Expression, is now live on Amazon and free on Kindle Unlimited. And free to everyone for this weekend only!
It is a late Victorian era romance, set in London and tells the tale of Katherine Forrester - a young wife, who is sent to a Harley Street doctor to cure her "female hysteria". Ultimately, it is a story of light and love in a world that can sometimes be incredibly dark.

New Release: Uncanny Tales.
A new anthology in which four tales of the weird and the uncanny spring forth from the English soil. Within these pages the reader will encounter four spirits: a Celtic goddess thirsting for vengeance; a mysterious sickle-wielding hedger; a mediaeval animalistic heretic, and a personification of Death that has journeyed far from its Breton homeland. Some are guardians of their place and of their values, caring not for contemporary social mores, or those who cleave to them. Woe to those who care to transgress what they deem to be right! Others wreak a vengeance upon the living to make them atone for perceived injustices, unleashing chaos in the personal lives and relationships of their chosen victims.
From the near-contemporary settings of The Rude Woman of Cerne and The Ghost of Scarside Beck, to the Victorian era and far further back still in At Fall of Night and Epona, each of these tales is firmly rooted in the strangeness of rural England. All four are ghost stories, but also draw upon folk horror, the gothic, historical fiction, and satire. Available from Amazon in paperback http://mybook.to/uncannytalespb
and Kindle formats myBook.to/uncannytales
