Raven Dane | 2 comments Blood Tears by Raven Dane. A re-leased first part of the Legacy of the Dark Kind trilogy with a prequel being written now.

The trilogy is an exciting cross over genre consisting of dark fantasy, alternative history and even a hint of science fiction. From the first novel, Blood Tears, it has gained an enthusiastic following and inspired artwork, music and even tattoos from its readers.
It is not a paranormal romance series, the Dark Kind do not sparkle! They are not human or supernatural beings but of a species higher up the food chain than humans. They have no interest in emotional contact with humans which would be considered bestiality to them. Their long life span is a result of their unique biology. Sunlight does not kill them but will permanently blind them. Once much of the known world was ruled by Dark Kind kings and queens, protecting their human subjects from invasions by raiders or barbarian armies. As mankind evolved and multiplied, one by one, the Dark Kind ruled lands were lost, leaving their few survivors to find a way to adapt in the new order of human domination. By the 20th century only one Dark Kind noble exists, Prince Azrar, warlord ruler of Isolann, a remote land ringed by vast black granite mountains in the Upper Balkans. Created to protect his subjects, can Azrar hold back the advances of human society as the 20th century gets closer to his secretive domain?

Raven Dane is a UK based author of dark fantasy, award winning steampunk, horror, alternative fiction and science fiction. She has twice been listed as one of the top female writers in horror and is in demand for her horror short stories

Alex Michaels (alexlmichaels) | 2 comments Against All Odds is out now and available with Kindle Unlimited! 💛
Genre: a contemporary romance with a crime subplot.

Blurb:
A mayor’s daughter.
A detective investigating her father’s disappearance.
They were two people who had nothing in common except their aversion to each other.
When they found themselves in a dire situation with no way out, they were forced to re-evaluate everything they believed in. After pride was swallowed, prejudices were forgotten and aversion turned into something else, all bets were off.
The risk was huge.
The odds stacked against them were overwhelming.
But love. Don’t get me started on love.
Epic.

Philip Whiteland | 3394 comments OUT TODAY!! The latest collection of Josiah and Archibald stories, with every story leading up to their recent Spanish adventure.

Welcome, once more, to the rather odd world of Josiah Oakshott and Archibald Thurble, respectively owner and employee of Oakshott and Underwood, ‘understanding and sympathy at your time of need’. If you’re new to these two characters, where have you been? This, their third book of short stories, picks up from where we left them in Grave Expectations, very much in the throes of the oddities of the Covid restrictions and the heightened demand on their profession, and proceeds, through encounters with various eccentric clients, the bizarre leisure habits of Archibald’s nan and their respective on/off romances, to an outcome that will challenge both of them.

BUY TODAY (1st Feb) and get it for just 99p!

M.T. McGuire (mtmcguire) | 8049 comments I dunno if anyone looks at this anymore but I have a new book out. It's a photo book:

Eyebomb, Therefore I Am

Here's the blurb:

Step into a realm where inanimate objects come to life and a simple pair of googly eyes holds the power to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. This book invites you to immerse yourself in the whimsical and hilarious world of eyebombing; the art of sticking googly eyes on unsuspecting inanimate items to unleash the joy within.

As you turn each page, you’ll find yourself smiling at the quirky personalities that emerge from everyday articles ranging from lampposts and traffic signs to automatic hand dryers and even dinner. The juxtaposition of the ordinary and the unusual challenges societal norms, reminding us to embrace new or different things, and look for humour in the unlikeliest of places.

Whether you’re a fan of street art, a lover of comedy, or are simply seeking a joyous escape from the mundane, this photo book is sure to leave you grinning from ear to ear. You might even end up stashing a pack of googly eyes in your own pockets and having a go at eyebombing yourself.

This one is launching on Kickstarter first because otherwise, by the time I've given Ingram/Amazon a cut, the cataloguing people at Betram's or Gardeners a cut and the book store a cut, it costs about £50 a copy, whereas I can sell it at £30 on Kickstarter and still 'lose' some of the postage costs in there along the way.

If you're interested, it's available until 22nd February on Kickstarter. Just paste or click on the link:

Ted Roberts (swash-author) | 2 comments "D'Artagnan Arrives Into Paris in 1640"

Through the thin crevices of time, and from old tomes on history, there just may be a justifiable way to find reasonable proof that the most famous Musketeer in history had indeed arrived into Paris for the first time in 1640 – despite “suggested” historical proof to the contrary. Which, as these historical documents “seem” to imply, the soldier-hero actually arrived much, much earlier – leaving both the famous “Memoirs of d’Artagnan” (especially its controversial author Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras – author of these famous Memoirs from the year 1700), and of d’Artagnan’s legendary meeting with the three Musketeers (Athos, Porthos, and Aramis) on the floor of total fiction! But, again, and as this present author of this modern work hopes to prove, the chances of d’Artagnan actually meeting these men, as Courtilz had at first suggested, just may be a plausible historical episode after all! . . . Follow along with Swashbuckling author, Ted Anthony Roberts (writer of both “Donaree the Musketeer” and “Sword Against the Robe”) in his very first work on historical non-fiction, and on the early life and career of France’s most famous swashbuckling hero – whilst he attempts, along the way, to set the historical record straight.

Strictly speaking, though, this book is not a detailed biography on either d’Artagnan, nor of his three friends, but is rather a short composite-sketch of the scarce information that we do have on the early life of d’Artagnan’s entry into Paris – which is almost totally lacking! Therefore, much detective work has to be done for anything satisfying, at all, to come across to us; especially when we realize that most of what we do know (which is extremely shaky itself) comes from Gatien de Courtilz de Sandras; which, as I’ve said, is a very controversial work on its “historic” accuracy, which most historians don’t even give an inch of consideration.

Angelina Souren (angelinasouren) | 7 comments You know what? I don't remember what made me ask ChatGPT if writing a booklet about this water topic might be a good idea. That was the first and so far only time I asked ChatGPT such a question. I have an associated background and have even worked with a university's water engineering and management department for many years, but this is a very simple booklet, nothing scientific about it, just a fun little booklet. I asked a few folks for some feedback and that was very helpful. Taking some of the photos was fun. Maybe it was going for a walk that brought it on. There is a heck of a lot of water here, at my current location. Maybe it was a news item that sparked it.

I wrote most of the second booklet in a day. I haven't mentioned in it what made me write it, at least not in detail. I've just spent about two decades in England which has far more inequality than the Netherlands, which has always been both highly egalitarian and highly/rigidly regulated, but I find the way they are handling some things now downright Orwellian. I was shocked.

I'm staying far away from anything AI right now - have enough on my plate with the human-generated ideas.

AI is being used before it's finished (if it ever will be). But each of us will make our own decisions and uses. I hope to see continued development of expert systems which help doctors figure out unusual cases.

message 533: by Angelina (last edited Jun 07, 2024 10:42AM) (new)

Angelina Souren (angelinasouren) | 7 comments I agree that AI is being used (released) prematurely, but that was also true of for example almost all Windows releases and of nanomaterials. Nanoparticles were already being added to lots of consumer products (such as toothpaste) before methods were available to filter them out of waste and I found that worrisome.

I try to stay on top of developments. How else can I judge them? (I try to focus on everything to do with bioethics, btw, so AI should have my interest for that reason too, but I agree that there is so much to stay on top of these days.) In addition, I've also always been driven by curiosity. So I tried it when ChatGPT was first released. I didn't like it much back then and you couldn't do much with it.

I still often don't like ChatGPT etc much. It's far too bland and basically gives you a majority opinion of what it finds on the web (and sometimes makes up). It does not give you smart answers. That said, ChatGPT is better than it was and can come in handy with practical matters such as asking it to translate a bit of text so that I know what it says in a foreign language. It does a better job than Google Translate.

(I don't use it for writing and publishing, and I don't use any other forms of AI either. I just ask ChatGPT questions every once in a while to see what it comes up with. The last thing it told me was: The French term "le sacre" translates to "the coronation" or "the consecration" in English. It can also refer to "The Rite," as in Igor Stravinsky's famous ballet "Le Sacre du Printemps," which is translated as "The Rite of Spring." That was because I had come across an artwork with that title.)

As you know, this is actually AI's second wave. I used to work in tourism & hospitality a long time ago. Then I had myself tested extensively as I was looking for something better to do. One of the areas I considered was computer science. AI was hot back then too for a while, but people lost interest.

I agree that it may be able to help with medical challenges, but I think that figuring out unusual cases will be difficult for AI. I suspect that this will still depend on human brains for a while. (Young doctors are often best at that; they are less likely to jump to conclusions.) AI is better suited for more routine tasks at this point. Think of for example assessing mammograms. This morning, I read that a hospital in Belgium is temporarily replacing its radiographers (with different human ones) and carrying out an investigation. Too many mistakes were made. A bone fracture was missed and a tumor was measured incorrectly, among other things. AI might do a better job here too. It doesn't get tired. Humans do.

Nice chatting with you!

Lance Morcan | 1 comments My historical adventure-romance New Zealand: A Novel, a love-hate literary exercise that has been half a century in the making, has been launched as a paperback and Kindle ebook on Amazon.

New Zealand A Novel by Lance Morcan

This novel spans almost 500 years and covers the respective discoveries of New Zealand by Pacific Islanders and Europeans. From the outset the two stories are interposed. It starts in the 1300’s with the departure of Islanders from Hawaiki in search of land far to the south.

Early reviews are in, and American book critic Grady Harp asks, ‘Is this the Great New Zealand Novel?” He describes the novel as “Fascinating”.

Fresh from their less than successful adventures in Spain, Josiah and Archibald face an uncertain future surrounded by police investigations and a business that is decidedly in the doldrums, not to mention the loss of both of their fiancees. However, the sudden reappearance of an old flame puts a spring in Josiah's step, as do the attentions of her daughter with Archibald. With a foot on the ladder of Cheshire society, surely the only way for Josiah and Oakshott & Underwood, is up? Not exactly! Jewel thefts, drownings, old ladies being tied up and left for dead and, in fact, suspicious deaths everywhere, there's more than enough to keep the local police, in the form of Detectives Wood and Stone, busy, if D.I. Wood can put his Caribbean holiday brochure down for a minute!

J.F. Goulding | 2 comments The Shimmers — paranormal mystery set in Dublin (Amazon UK Storyteller 2025)

Hi all,
My debut novel The Shimmers is out now — a paranormal mystery thriller set in Dublin, where crime investigation collides with shadows, strange vibrations and overlapping dimensions. One of the central characters, Oscar, is on the autism spectrum, and his unique perception shapes the way the mystery unfolds.
