Yes, I think you're probably right Kate - not really small, but not a huge affair like Edith's, either. Of course they'd each do what the other wanted, I know. I also wonder quite a bit whether it would be a consideration with either of them, the issue of whether to flaunt Margaret's wealth in a wedding. I mean, there have got to be a few people in Milton (idiots) who would speculate about whether John married Margaret for her wealth; I wonder whether they would be careful about how their wedding turned out, in order not to encourage that impression.

In any case, I would so love to see Margaret and Thornton's wedding, however it turned out. That would be so beautiful. <3

QNPoohBear | 315 comments They'll get married in the church in Milton and Higgins will give Margaret away, much to the dismay of Aunt Shaw.

That seems pretty accurate, actually! I would ask, though, who do you think Aunt Shaw would prefer to give Margaret away? It's not like Mr Bell can do it (*sad face*), so really, who else would there be?

Oh, goodness, I just imagines Slickson or Hamper giving her away... Lord no... Must erase that image from my mind, that wouldn't do at all.

QNPoohBear | 315 comments Aunt Shaw wouldn't approve of Margaret's friendship with someone so low born and radical as Higgins. She would want Edith's husband to give Margaret away, preferably to Henry and not to Thornton. I'm sure Higgins has read The Communist Manifesto which had recently been published. I'd love for Margaret to meet Karl Marx in London and bring him to Milton to meet Higgins. Fan fiction anyone?

Speaking of Aunt Shaw, as I mentioned in another post ...

Funny coincidence: I went to see a stage production of Sense and Sensibility, and guess who was playing Mrs Jennings/Fanny Dashwood? Jane Booker - aka Mrs Shaw from the 2004 N&S series! It was pretty cool seeing her on stage!

Kate (kwolicki) | 152 comments I am totally agreeing with Qnpoohbear on all counts, except I loathe the "giving away" so I'm pulling for Margaret to walk up the aisle with her fellow and no intimations of ownership of women at all, appropriate to time period or not.

I actually kind of like that idea, Margaret not being given away seems... appropriate, for her. She bore everything else alone, why should she share her wedding day with any man but Thornton? Though it is kind of sweet, the idea of Higgins giving her away. :)

Kate (kwolicki) | 152 comments Is it bad to confess that I walked up the aisle with my fiancé because we wanted to emphasize the coming together and no way were either of us being "given away" so now I want Margaret to do it too? How self centered can I be? My way is the most romantic? I think I empathize with Margaret a bit too much, and arrogantly find her to be my fictional doppelgänger. And it too this strand of this thread for me to realize it!

No, Kate, it is not too bad to confess that. :) I'm sure if I were married, there would be parts of my wedding that I would love to see in Margaret's too. It's not self-centred at all, everyone is entitled to their opinion of what is romantic. And I think everyone likes to see a bit of themselves in their favourite heroines - I know I like to see parts of myself in Margaret! Perhaps I don't quite consider her my "fictional doppelgänger", but I completely understand the sentiment. :)

Louise Sparrow (louisex) | 158 comments I have to say that I find the idea of them walking down the aisle together quite appropriate, I'm not sure there's anyone who has the right to give Margaret away but herself.

message 61: by Kate (new)

Kate (kwolicki) | 152 comments Yay Louise! That is the best phrasing ever: no one has the right to give away Margaret except herself."

But I think Higgins should come to the wedding. Series Higgins please and sitting next to me. Swoon.

I agree, perfect phrasing Louise!

Well, Kate, if we ever get to actually planning Margaret's perfect wedding, I'll be sure to keep in mind your request regarding Higgins! :D *scribbles on seating plan*

... Though I'm sure at least a few girls in this group (I'm not going to deny it, myself included) would prefer to be in the brides place than anywhere else. :P
