This folder is the place to share hot tips about freebies, raffles and contests related to the space opera genre, including free ebooks, notice of Goodreads First-Reads Giveaway contests, author-sponsored raffles of autographed paperbacks and kindles, and other contests that might benefit Space Opera readers that are genuine offers of something of value and not pathetically thinly described attempts to ensnare people (those long Rafflecopter hoops, anyone?). The rules are laid out below, but remember ... self-Promotion is prohibited in this folder!
READERS: this long list of rules is aimed at authors, bloggers and professional media marketing types who would spam the crap out of this community. The only rule for YOU is 'Oh! Goodie! This looks awesome!'
Here are the rules for everybody else who is trying to decide if your offer might be welcome here, or is spam:
Here are the FREE EBOOKS posting rules:
1. No more than ONCE PER MONTH!!!
2. Can ONLY be dropped at the end of the Free Ebooks thread which is HERE:
3. The book must be free the day you post the link! No posting links to future sales or books that have so many hoops to jump through to get the book (such as Rafflecopter) that they aren't really free ... those must go in the Self-Promotion folder which is HERE: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group....
4. The book must be downloadable to e-readers, desktops and handheld devices in .epub, .azw/.mobi or .pdf format.
5. The book must be a full and complete story, not just a teaser-sampler! Novels, novellas, novelletes and short-stories are all acceptable, but teaser-samplers, serials (stories which publish as a different chapter or segment each week), or promos that don't resolve until a future book are not welcome here!
6. This is a 'running thread,' which means the newest postings are the most current and older ones may have expired. Readers: Always make sure the book is still free when you click the download link because stuff expires!!!
7. Please post links to the same book no more than ONCE per month. Any more than that is irritating, spammy, and obnoxious and will be deleted!
8. Since Space Opera Fans is an intergalactic and inter-species community, please post links to other distribution platforms and communities besides just Amazon USA if you happen to know them. While Amazon is great, competition is even better.
--It is okay if the freebie is a direct download .epub or .mobi linked off of your blog, but warn people it's directly from you and where they'll be getting the file from, okay? [*I am personally paranoid about downloading a virus from somebody I don't know, so say 'this file is directly from me via my Dropbox/Googledocs/S3-cloud/etc account*]
--A free ebook offer cannot ask for an email signup in exchange for the freebie. Stick a reader magnet at the end of your freebie if you want to entice readers to give you their email addresses, after the reader decides if they like your work and trust you enough to give it to you, not HERE.
9. You can simply drop in a link, but it will perform better if you add the book cover and up to a 300-character book description. No long book descriptions!!! If it is more than 4 lines, the moderator will delete it!
10. If the free ebook offer has a start and end date, please list it. There is nothing more irritating than clicking through a link and finding out it expired.
11. Authors ... you may drop in your own link to your own promotional freebie, however, you must follow the rules above.
Here are the rules for a RAFFLE, CONTEST or First-Reads Giveaway:
1. No more than ONCE PER MONTH!!!
2. Can ONLY be dropped at the tail-end of the Contests, Raffles & Giveaways thread which is HERE:
3. Must be TANGIBLE and BOOK-RELATED, such as a chance to win a physical autographed paperback of a book or book-related item such as a kindle, not intangible objects such as ebooks, swag, or anything egregiously self-promotional.
4. Must be sci-fi or space opera related. Sci-fantasy is okay, but sparkly vampires are not (except in the case of Riddick, in which case the minions of the undead are on a space ship).
5. The contest or raffle can't ask for anything more than an email address so you can notify the winner.
--Remember there are canned spam laws that say you can't spam the crap out of people who give you their email address! If you do this, your web host could shut down your blog!
--Here's a helpful guide about other laws that govern a giveaway: http://sarafhawkins.com/blog-law-is-y...
--And another with a handy form at the end: http://www.bloglegally.com/how-to-run...
6. No lengthy rafflecopters where you have to blog, tweet, post, share, write an essay and offer up the blood of a virgin in order to enter the fr!c#!n contest (those aggravate the crap out of readers). It's okay if you want to entice entrants to do those things by giving them extra 'entries' as a chance to win, but to gain a single entry, all they should have to do is give you their email address so you can say 'hi, you won.'
7. Please post the beginning and end-date of the raffle, contest or giveaway. Nothing aggravates readers more than following a dead link.
8. If your physical contest or giveaway is limited by geography or age due to postage or other considerations (i.e., 18+, limited to USA), you must state so CLEARLY.
Okay Space Opera Fans! May the odds of winning forever be in your favor.
I like free stuff and I cannot lie,
You other readers can't deny
When someone walks in with a book in their hands
And a chance to get it free
I get sprung, yeah, my face lights up
Cause I like free stuff
I admit it, I'm broke, I'm cheap
But, oh, baby, I wanna get it!
So tell me how to win it!
Blah, blah, blah … y'all get the point :-)
Be epic!
