oh dear... you really have opened a can of worms, Dee!
I'd clarify though that the clock starts ticking when once you get your books picked so if you've go requests to make (which you won't be able to do til the 1st), the clock hasn't yet started.

NOTE: I've just added a point to the rules
Part B 6.c
c. If Property is Owned by you: read a book of your choice (preferably from your Bookopoly shelf)

I didn't specify that it has to be found on shelves though i believe its understood that in challenges, books must be found on specific shelf whilst for monthly shelf, its as long as within spirit.

if genre is noted as one of book's shelves, that is acceptable.

Thanks for the quick reply! I have an interlibrary loan that I need to read ASAP. I can now use it.

Ooh, no, we haven't addressed that at all!
I'd say that you have to finish at least one of the books picked for you for that square.

Well, in this case it was a book I picked myself for one of the tasks. It's so hard for me to read at the moment that I just can't go on. So, do I just choose another book for the same task, or roll the dice again as if I never happened to be on that square? I would rather say I pick another book for the same task, but I wanted to ask just to be sure.

I do too. Rolling again because what you landed on didn't work would open up a big can of worms for a lot of situations.
Imagine that you asked yourself to pick 3 choices for yourself, and this one didn't work -- you still have two others to try.

I totally agree with you, Susan, but I wanted to ask if this would be considered "normal procedure". I've put the book on hold for the moment, maybe tomorrow I'll feel differently about it -- but if it doesn't work, I'll just pick another book for the same task. (For the record, it's The Girl with All the Gifts and it's giving me nightmares, despite my loving it, and I simply cannot afford to have nightmares in this moment of my life).

I agree with Bea and Susan - Just pick another book for that square and start over. You have 4 weeks to complete a book for a square as long as you are not trying to purchase a property, which this one certainly isn't if you picked your own book, so just pick another and start again.
BTW - I know what you are going through. A couple of months ago I was reading a book with a bunch of friends....it was the second in the series...I really liked the book, but it literally gave me nightmares. I finally had to put it aside and read something else. No book is worth nightmares!
I'll send Tien a note to update the FAQs with this one in case anyone else has the same problem. :)

I'm a firm believer in DNF -why waste time on books you don't like or scare you!?!
I've amended FAQ
Q: What if I can't finish the book I'm reading for the square?
A: You are required to read at least 1 book per square so read another book that has been picked for you. Or, if you're on a task-related square, pick another book that fits the task.

Edited one too many times probably...
9. Sort your shelf by random and read one of the first 5 books on the top of the list.
I'll edit the Board post when i get on pc.
Sorry, everyone :(

Can you list the link to your shelf so that I can update. And we need a way to differentiate you and the other Karen. Any ideas?

Hi Lyn will link it up tomorrow morning :)
This is so stupid of me but I thought this challenge started on January 1 and was waiting accordingly*bangs head on wall*

Not stupid at all, Karen. This is a start anytime you want challenge, so go ahead and start now. It is non-competitive and designed to help you decide what to read by having others choose for you. There are still several properties for sale, too, so all is good there. Jump in!

Hasn't happened yet, but I just wondered as someone may be on vacation and not able to check their computer for an extended period.

Actually, I have been thinking about how to handle that, Amy, good question. I have a proposal that I worked out for this and should be ready to post it soon. Just working on finishing touches.

Thanks, Lyn. On a separate subject, an update is needed in the game board post to reflect that D.G. owns The Great Gatsby square. Right now that square links to the main book request thread instead.
Sorry, I haven't really been able to do anything at home (out of bandwith which resulted in very frustratingly slow connection)... I'm fixing it now.

Amy - In answer to your question, we have come up with an ammendment to the rules. Below is the addtion:
Property Owners have 48 hours to pick books for other players who have landed on their property and made a request in the appropriate thread. . Failure to do so would require that your property be repossessed.
If you find that you are going to be gone for a longer time period than 48 hours you could do one of two things:
a. pick another player to "property sit" for you (notify them by GR PM) and they can pick books for players who land on your property.
b. Notify the librarians by GR PM and we will pick for players in your absence.
If you do not do one of the two options above, the first time that a submitted request goes unanswered for more the 48 hours, a librarian will pick for that turn. At that time, your property will be repossessed and requests will go back to being handled in the general book request thread. The property will also be put up for re-sale.
I hope that sounds clear enough. Let me know if you have questions.

Thanks so much, Bea!

i say this because GR notifications can be notoriously bad, but PM's normally aren't, then if they don't response, its a done deal
Thanks, Dee. I'd second that recommendation. Notification can get buried & missed if you have a million of them... PM the owner a gentle reminder is a good nudge :)

So -- I am so far behind the times. I didn't even realize that you could notify a person any other way than by PM, so when I said notification I meant PM, lol. I have updated the post above to include that the notification will be by PM.
