Chuck | 98 comments Finished "Suspect" by Michael Robotham. This was the 1st in a series with psychologist Joe O'Loughlin and police detective Ruiz. I certainly will continue with the series - 4/5 stars.

Now reading "The Brave" by Nicolas Evans, one of my favorite writers:

"Tom Bedford lives alone in the wilds of Montana. Distanced from his own troubled past, he rarely sees his son, Danny, who is now deployed in Iraq. Tom hasn't always been so isolated. As a boy, his mother was a rising movie star in the glitzy, enchanted world of 1960s Hollywood. She fell in love with young Tom's onscreen cowboy hero, the suave Ray Montane. Tommy and his mother lived in a glamorous, Hollywood version of the Wild West--until a shocking and deadly confrontation forced them to flee.

As a man, Tom has put all of that behind him--until Danny is charged with murder. In the chaos of war, his son has been caught in a violent skirmish gone bloodily awry, and the Army needs someone to pay for the mistake. Shocked into action, Tom confronts the violence in his past and fights to save the son he'd let slip away. As father and son struggle to understand one another, they also learn the true meaning of bravery."

Rachel Into the Free (Into the Free #1) by Julie Cantrell 4-1-14
When I first started reading this book, I wondered why it was considered Christian fiction. There were a few mentions of God here and there, but there was almost no character with a true faith until close to the end when we meet Bump's family and when the main character finally decides to believe in God after a horrible chain of experiences. (view spoiler) This isn't a typical Christian novel, but it is a great story of coming to salvation and of the beginnings of recovery. It's written well, and the characters are well done. The only reason it's 4 stars instead of 5 is because it was so depressing.

Rachel The Weed That Strings the Hangman's Bag (Flavia de Luce, #2) by Alan Bradley 4-3-14
This was a well-written and interesting mystery novel. The protagonist is really interesting, and I thought the author did well in fleshing out the other characters as well.

I love Flavia's stories. She is unique.

Colleen Mertens | 63 comments So I finished "Out of Oz". Loved it. I like Maguire's new takes on Oz more than the movie. This one has now inspired to think about reading the original books by Baum. Maybe later this year. Now I am on to "The Princess Bride". I love the movie. Have heard nothing but good things about the book. Can't wait.

Colleen Mertens | 63 comments So I finished "The Princess Bride". Excellent book. It was similar to the movie but there were definitely some good parts that got cut from the movie. Loved this book. Moving on to "The Carefree Amverican" from my Goodreads book list.

Rachel The Dancing Master by Julie Klassen 4-11-14
This was an interesting and entertaining historical novel. The characters were drawn well, and I liked the plot and learning with Julia who she really was. I really liked the story of the fountain as well.

Rachel The Measure of Katie Calloway (Michigan Northwoods, #1) by Serena B. Miller 4-13-14
I really enjoyed this novel. The characters were well drawn, and the plot was entertaining, making a balance of the serious and the funny. I liked the historical setting as well. It has earned a place on my favorites list.

Rachel Larkspur Cove (Moses Lake, #1) by Lisa Wingate 4-18-14
This was a fairly entertaining Christian novel set in contemporary times. Only two of the characters were really developed well over the course of the story, and it took me until about halfway through the book to feel any affinity for the characters. The writing pace felt way too slow for me although the crisis was well written, but it really felt unexpected and out-of-place for the rest of the story. I definitely won't bother with the rest of the series.

Rachel Peony in Love by Lisa See 4-20-14
This was such a well-written and interesting novel. As usual with Lisa See's novels, I learned something new about traditional Chinese culture. I enjoyed the insight into the Chinese view of the afterlife as well. The characters are lovely and although as usual, I didn't understand any of the poetry included, the lyrical quality was great. This is another new favorite by one of the best contemporary authors.

Rachel For Time & Eternity (Sister Wife #1) by Allison Pittman 4-22-14
This has been one of the most informative and interesting Christian historical novels I have read lately. It is written very well, and the characters are fully drawn and are relatable. I learned quite a bit about early Mormonism. This is another new favorite for sure.

Forsaking All Others (Sister Wife #2) by Allison Pittman 4-24-14
This has been one of the most informative and interesting Christian historical novels I have read lately. It is written very well, and the characters are fully drawn and are relatable. I learned quite a bit about early Mormonism. This is another new favorite for sure.

Rachel Fall of a Kingdom (The Farsala Trilogy, #1) by Hilari Bell 4-26-14
This was one of the most interesting fantasy novels I've read in a while, and what do you know, it wasn't set in a type of medieval Europe or a fantastically fake place; it is instead a rather Persian setting. The characters were well drawn, the plot was interesting, and it sucked me into the world immediately. My one complaint is that I was rooting for the conquering nation the whole time because the Farsalans seem to not have a single redeeming quality with saving in comparison with their enemies, the Hrum. However, I really loved it and count it as another new favorite.

message 21: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Violet Dawn (Kanner Lake Series #1) by Brandilyn Collins 4-27-14
This was a fast-paced and entertaining suspense novel. There were some very unique elements involved with character development as well. It was written quite well, but I felt that the denouement was far too short and hurried so getting four stars rather than five.

Colleen Mertens | 63 comments So it took all month but I finally finished "The Footloose American" which I won in a contest on Goodreads. It was interesting book to read. It took me a while to get through it because I knew nothing about the subject matter. It is a good travel story and would be fascinating to fans of Hunter S. Thompson's writing. Now I want to read Thompson. But first, in honor of Star Wars Day, I'm reading "Death Star". May the fourth be with you. Happy Star Wars Day.
