Since both names are used on the covers but do not seem to be kept separate deliberately, they can be merged.Goodreads prefers to go with the fuller name, i.e. Gary L. Ecelbarger. That way, people searching for Gary Ecelbarger will still find the books.
Can I simply add the middle initial to the other books or is there another way this should be done?
Yes, you can go to Gary Ecelbarger's profile, click on 'edit data' and change his name. The system will tell you there already is a Gary L. Ecelbarger and ask you which profile you want to keep. Click on the left one (Gary L. Ecelbarger), and they will be merged. All the books will be corrected at the same time.

I did a Google search and from this website here: http://www.macmillanspeakers.com/gary..., it looks like the two authors listed above are actually the same author. I was wondering which version of his name should be used.
