Hi Jennifer- I'm @ 30% done and really like it. It is a very interesting read for me, especially because the viewpoint is so unique. 'Verity' is telling the entire story as she writes it down for her Nazi interrogators! This poor Allied spy who is really still a young girl does a great job of blending in history of the war with a great story. I am on the edge of my seast to see what really becomes of her after she gives them what they want- what kind of an ending do you think it will be??

Have you finished yet? I'm at 24% now. I'm doing the 24 hour readathon today so I'll definitely be finishing this one. I know what you mean. I'm really nervous for her too. She doesn't seem to be nervous at all! I like how the story is written too. It's really unique. I thought that the prescriptions for Miss E were funny. I like the friendship with Maddie and I thought it was interesting that she is writing from Maddie's point of view and inserted herself into the story in third person. I don't know if I would have realized on my own that she was Queenie. It would have taken me a while, if I ever did at all. I'll keep posting as I go. I'll use spoilers for my next post because I'm not sure if you've finished.

Wow- a 24 hour readathon??!! No I am at 50% so you should ZOOM by me today! I love her sense of humor! Although how could she even have one believing she will be executed soon?? I wouldn't be able to function at all. I love her spirit. Of course her detail in the memory sequences is a bit much but I'm loving it! I love their friendship too- I thought she may have been Queenie but wasn't sure- so cool how she writes that from Maddies perspective since it was 'her' story to tell. I wonder what's going to happen and if we will ever find out what happened to maddie?!

I'm wondering if we will find out what happens to either of them since the story is being written by her. If something happens to her, how will we get the end of the story??? I think that the second part is different from the first. The chapter names change, so I'm not sure what that means.

Right??? I didn't see that coming. I knew she knew more than she was letting on and come on, she has nerves of steel. She has to be in this deeper than we think, but I couldn't believe that she got hurt like that and she was actually interrogating. Also, do you think she's pregnant?

I was wondering that too. She eludes to doing things to get men to talk;). Or else she's under so much stress her period has stopped. I didn't think she was that far into it either! Although she is very bright and brave. Almost too cavalier at times!

I'm wondering if Von L has a thing for Queenie? A little love interest?

I just finished Part 1. Wow! It's getting REALLY good now! I don't know. It seems like he might.

Part 2 Chapter 17...

(view spoiler)[I just can't believe that this is how this is going to end. I have been on pins and needles for chapters now. So nervous about whether or not they were going to be able to rescue her, and what is going to happen with Engel. And now this!!! I can't believe she had to shoot her, but it was definitely better than the slow death that she was going to get. There was no way out of it, so she saved her a lot of pain, but this was always one of their biggest fears. It's just SO sad. How is Maddie going to live with herself? (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I probably would have to be drugged too. I probably would have killed that guy that they saved. I understand that he couldn't really help her. The guy who tried to put his arm around the girl who was shivering got his hand shot off, but just the way he talked was terrible. He acted like even if that weren't the case, he still wouldn't have helped her. (hide spoiler)]

Wow you are a reading machine! I'm about 70% now and guessing that etienne is the guard Julie has beaten a couple of times. And the reporter was sent there to find her!! I wonder! I hope!!

I have so much to update I keep jumping all over the place. I'm just skimming back over the last part of this so that I can post notes.

Part 2 Chapter 19

(view spoiler)[I was so glad that Maddie actually confirmed that Verity was lying to them and gave them fake codes. I kind of had a feeling that she was, especially when she kept yelling at the French girl that was being tortured to LIE! But it was nice to know for sure.

And yep, you're right about Etienne and the reporter. I'm pretty sure I already wrote a spoiler about that. You should get to it soon. (hide spoiler)]

Chapter 20

I did wonder who she meant to have read these papers if she thought that Maddie was dead, or did she know that it wasn't really Maddie and just wrote to make is seem like she was devastated about her death as an act? Why would she write about her great aunt when that conversation never really happened? I she trying to tell someone something? (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[So she was giving them messages in her notes. And the great aunt story did have meaning. The operation looks like it will still be successful even though there have been so many casualties. This is what Verity would have wanted though. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I couldn't believe that Engle knew Verity all that time and was the one who was supplying her with the cigarettes that she was using as payment for things that whole time. Do you think that is why she always gave her the most grief? The prescription pads and everything? Because she knew that she was the one translating and could cover it up? (hide spoiler)]

I do have one question when you finish. Do you know what this means?

(view spoiler)[When Von Linden killed himself and Maddie got the news and Balliol said "Another wretched man." Why did Maddie say "Another wretched girl." What did she mean?

Also, I thought the letter from Julie's mom was really sweet at the end. (hide spoiler)]

I couldn't believe Engle was in on it the whole time- more or less! That really surprised me! Then how could she do all those horrible things? Yes I suppose to make it believable- altho she didn't end up swabbing her mouth with acid did she?
I wondered the same thing about the wretched girl. I think she meant herself, as she just mentioned the ripple again, because blowing up his headquarters and taking his prisoners probably would have gotten him killed by his own supervisor, so he had to take his own life. But she set it in motion. Maybe?

What a GREAT story! I loved those girls and their relationship. And their bravery. And humor! They were awesome. But so sad. I hoped there was a spark with Jamie too...;)

And I also keep thinking back to the day that Engel came into the interrogation room with Von Linden and Julie could tell that she had been crying and wondered why. That was never explained was it? I wonder what happened that day.

Also, I didn't realize when I started this book that it is a series, but I think that the second book is an entirely different set of characters. Do you know anything about it? I'm definitely not ready to jump into that any time soon. This was rough.

I was hoping for a Jaime/Maddie spark too. There was definitely something. I liked when she was flying him after she told him that she was the one who killed Julie and he just sat there the whole flight with his hand on her shoulder. So sweet. Such a hard thing to have to tell someone. But it was the right thing to do. It's still hard.

Yes that was amazing! I don't know how she did it even though it was the right thing to do. Unbelievable. Did I miss how they explained how Julie left her in that crashed plane?? I was confused. Did she know it wasn't her the whole time?

Julie jumped and Maddie had to land it. I think she knew because they changed the cargo in the pictures. Julie knew exactly what was on the plane so she would have known if the cargo was changed then the crash site was set up. That's why Maddie was only okay with letting them show her the photos after she saw the second picture with the cargo. She knew that Julie would be able to figure that out.

Of course she jumped! Duh. I knew that. Mental blip. I was wondering too who she was writing for-Julue. I figured she wasn't really telling them what they wanted but did not expect all of that! I loved the aunt too. Too bad she didn't know it was Julid. Of maybe that was better.

I agree. I wasn't expecting it to get quite so twisted at the end. I epected a couple surprises, but that was crazy!
