What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

Query abandoned by poster > Cop mystery, suspense. Every other chapter followed the cop and then switched to the Bad Guy that kidnaps a boy. YA or even possibly an adult book.

Danielle Peterson | 9 comments I'm looking for a book I had discovered and fell in love with when I was in junior high, back in bout 2005-2006.
It's about a cop who's following a child killer. The man kidnaps young kids (his favorites being boys) and he pretty much keeps them around as he moves form city to city until he grows tired of them and kills them.
The story starts with a new boy being kidnapped and the cop refuses to let it happen again so he becomes relentless.

I mainly remember the boy being held in a trunk of a car, I think? And a lot of car driving on the bad guy's end, trying to stay a step ahead of the cop.

Almost every other chapter changed perspective. Following the cop and his leads, tactics, etc. Before going back to the boy and what's happening with him and how he's coping or surviving.

I think it was a YA book, but could very easily be an adult read too. It was paperback and I don't remember the cover except that it was dark in color.
I read it once and loved it. Promised to keep it forever but after moving so many times, myself, I lost it and have not, for the life of me, remember it's name! :(

****SPOILER****

If I'm remembering right, the ending was a happy ending. The cop won, but it was a close call as the bad guy was getting ready to "dispose" of the boy. I think the cop ends up killing the bad guy?

Will | 59 comments It sounds very James Patterson. Check out the Alex Cross novels.

Can you tell us more about the cop - experience, age, background, family, personality, etc.?

Danielle Peterson | 9 comments I checked out the books all of you have suggested but it's not any of them. :(
Though I'm very interested in the one "mdt" linked, so there's something, haha.

@Will: I searched through his books but it doesn't seem like it. I didn't find any about a child predator.

@Kris: I seriously can't remember much. He was an older cop, I don't believe he had any family of his own. If I remember right, there was talk of this being his last case because the cheif (and others) thought he was pushing himself too hard and was also only focusing on this case, even on his own time. He didn't care and from what I think I remember, he left on his own investigation to chase the bad guy.
He's a hard man that has seen too many dead children and he just wants to stop this monster he's chasing and wants to save the boy. I think he even promises the parents, that no matter what, their son will be the end of it and he'll bring him home.

Also, I remember a lot of the story focusing more on the characters thoughts, a lot of descriptions, etc. I don't remember there being a lot of dialogue, though I could be horribly wrong there....
Also, as I said, each chapter was switching between the cop and the bad guy. I never came across a book like that before, or after even.

Danielle Peterson | 9 comments Oh! This was mainly set, or at least started, in a large city like New York. I think it was New York.
I remember a scene near the beginning maybe that described the taxis, gritty streets, grey skies and rain. Also the people and smell, etc.
And I might have been wrong about a car at some point and the boy being in the trunk. The man might have had in in the back of a van. Though he could have switched vehicles?
I just remember the boy being tied up, not being able to really see anything, and being scared while the man drove from city.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Was this part of a series?
How old is the boy?
Time period story takes place?

message 11: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Peterson | 9 comments It didn't seem like a part of a series at all and if the cop was a recurring character for several books then this book did great standing on it's own.
The boy was around the age of 9 I think? He was pretty young.
The time period was modern, somewhere in the 2000's.

Erika (escilas) | 43 comments Only book I remember about kids being abducted is The Murder Artist: A Thriller. I'm pretty sure it's not the one you're looking for, but you never know, right? Good luck!
