How long ago did you read this book? I think there are a lot that fit this description. The first that came to mind was The Dead Zone by Stephen King. There are a few different versions, but this has a better description:

It definitely wasn't The Dead Zone. I'm a big Stephen King fan so know this for sure. It has been a while since I read this book, but it was like, for example, the man would get a feeling that someone was going to get hit by a car in front of the school so he would "happen" to go there and be able to save them. Or something bad was going to happen to a family traveling in a camper.
