It would need to be earlier--a book published in the 70s or 80s. Maybe as late as the early 90s, but I don't think so. Thanks, though!
This sounds like a book I'm very familiar with, called Raven's Gate by Anthony Horowitz, but that was published in 2005. That book, however, is a rewrite of another, earlier book, by the same author, called The Devil's Door Bell, published in 1983. I haven't read that one (yet) but it might be worth looking into.

The local library has a copy of Raven's Gate, but I'm thinking of ordering a copy of the earlier book since they're not too expensive. I'll let you know if it's the one.

Setting is contemporary "real" world of the 70s or 80s. Book is serious-ish, like William Sleator--there's nothing funny or whimsical about the model coming to life. Dinosaurs are not a recurring theme; this one was just handy. I wish I knew what the overall plot was!
