However, there's very little indication of what the king is really up to, but I highly doubt it's simply conquering the world, even though that's what we're led to believe.

Hahaha, yes I would love to see this happen! Though would Aelin or Dorian get the honours? :')

Laughed at that. YES that is what should happen to him!
I'm actually really curious as to why the king hates magic so much. Why did he ban it? How does (view spoiler) ? At first I thought the king built those (view spoiler)

I don't think it was ever revealed. But Sarah J Maas says that maybe it will be revealed in a future book.

What we know:
He discovered the first key at around 20 years of age (according to Mort) and built the clocktower for Dorians birth (according to Chaol) and 8 years after that cast his spell. And 8/9 years after that turned his sights to developing his slave trade. The commander at Noll said the king visited the Volcano to grab the second key 10 years ago in (HoF) so that means Aelin was 8 or 9, so probably just before he visited Terrasen and tormented Aelin during dinner. I also think its safe to assume that during the stages of ToG he commissioned the making of the wayverns. I forget where he supposedly went during the King's Champion contest.
As for the King being surprised about Dorians magic... I think he's probably been looking for signs for the last few years and dont forget his cousin Rolland? is it had a ring on in CoM and was following Dorian. Dorian felt eyes on him when he went to see Yellowlegs and Celaena found out shortly after she sold Dorian out...I think it was to Rolland and in turn the king.I just dont think the King knew by HoF just HOW powerful Dorian actually was...I think the king maybe suspected he had minimal power like himself (well before the keys that is)
I do think at this stage in the series the King is no longer concerned with heirs so Dorian is really just a tool and expendable to him. My reasoning for this is he has two keys at this point all his nasty plans have gone from a drawing board to actual creation he has a massive monster army. His own Black wayvern puppet army and control of most of Erilea. He's beyond power hungry and probably feels its not impossible for him to get that third key and make himself immortal or something. An immortal really doesnt need heirs.
I do feel that its Dorians job to overthrow his father. Chaol doesnt want to ask it of him but I think thats the reality. Aelin can't do it on her own. I think it will have to be Aelin and Dorian together. Dorian to incompassitate him and Aelin to finish the job.

It's a very far-off theory and there's a good chance that it won't happen, but I think it would be SUCH a big plot twist if it did. What if towards the end of QoS, Aelin or Dorian kills the King and then directly after they learn that it actually wasn't him this whole time.
