Heart of Darkness questions

Maybe I wasn’t reading close enough or missed a couple sentences but I had a couple nagging questions:

1. It does not seem like Marlow spoke with Kurtz long enough to for such a strong attachment to him (Kurtz)??

2. How did all the ivory Kurtz was getting make it down the river? Was Marlow’s boat the only boat on the river before it went aground?

He doesn't need to speak to Kurtz for long or even at all as he's entirely invented a version of Kurtz in his head long before meeting him.
If he had gotten to know Kurtz the reality might have been quite different from the version we're presented with IMO.
