Kathleen Schmitt | 2 comments I was born in Chicago on January 1 long enough ago that i remember watching the broadcast of the first moon landing. In second grade, I discovered my life vocation: horses. During my senior year of high school, I worked at Horst and Harriet Haenert’s Pine Grove Farms just outside Scales Mound, Illinois (population under 400, not on every map) and a far cry in every way from my urban upbringing. One morning after high school graduation, Harriet remarked that one of their horses, Alibhai, was looking less robust than usual. She speculated that the next winter could be especially hard on him. As a joke, I suggested riding him to her sister’s farm in Arizona. Harriet went to get an atlas. The idea of The Grand Trek was born.
Between riding training in Britain and Germany and graduating from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, it took until the first woman was nominated to the Supreme Court before I got around to undertaking The Grand Trek, mostly following the general path of European westward settlement. After seven months on the road, I returned to the East Coast and started a hike up the corporate ladder. Bill Clinton was President when I returned to my vocation, restoring a formerly prominent horse boarding and training operation to a thriving horse boarding and training facility.
People asked me often enough about The Grand Trek that I resorted to writing some of its more interesting days before, during and after. The result is The Best That Can Happen: The Grand Trek.
I'm working on how to approach a sequel about adventures after The Grand Trek.
If you'd like to read some excerpts please go to www.thegrandtrek.com. You can also request an ebook or audiobook to review via the Contact page on the website. Thanks!

Dallas Elkheart (dpelkheart) | 12 comments My name is Dallas P. Elkheart. I am the author of "Bronze Bloodline of The Phoenix.

My story synopsis is:

“Bronze Bloodline of the Phoenix,” is a chilling true story. This newborn baby girl was born with unique abilities. She would not learn of her bloodline birthright to these mysterious powers for many years to come. The problem begins when she finds out her gifts can create changes and open gateways that should never be opened, because, they can be “HELL” to close.

It has a mixture of laughs, tears, anger, and numerous other emotions, yet it is a very true story and certainly not for the faint of heart, but...

I would like for someone to read and review my book to see where it stands. It looks as if 1 person has read it already from GoodReads, and gave a rating, but would like more input good, bad or indifferent.

I like to write true stories, but I am now preparing to write a business book and then on to some other type novels.
I am from the United States and moved to Portugal almost 1 year ago.

Lindsay Pratt (lindsay_pratt) | 2 comments Hi all. My name is Lindsay Pratt and I am the self-published author of Surviving Motherhood: The Baby Years, a laugh-out-loud journal that helps Moms ‘journal their way to maternal sanity’ today, while capturing memories that can be enjoyed tomorrow. This is the first of a ‘Surviving Motherhood’ series, where each journal will focus on a different life stage (e.g. The Baby Years, The Preschool Years, etc.). Please check out my Goodreads profile at https://www.goodreads.com/lindsay_pratt.

I really enjoy reading books with humour (e.g. Janet Evanovich and books written by comedians such as Jim Gaffigan) but I also like a good mystery with a strong female protagonist and a bit of humour (e.g. Sue Grafton, Joanne Fluke).

I am fairly new to Goodreads and am not much of a social media user, so am just trying to figure out how things work. I am really grateful to find a reviewer’s group as I am finding it very challenging to find people who are willing to do honest reviews, however I am hesistant to run any promotions until I have at least a few reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.

Thanks everyone!

message 1379: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Jaskolka (jeffjaskolka) | 3 comments Hi everyone! My name is Jeff Jaskolka and I am new to both Goodreads and this group. I am a new self-published author and just recently released my first memoir entitled TWO ONE FIVE (stylized in all caps). But first here's a little info on myself:

I was born & raised my whole life in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, US. It is a pretty harsh environment to grow up in depending on what part of the city you're from. I'm happily married to my gorgeous wife who is African-American and we have a precious daughter together who is of mixed race (white and black).

I'm a huge fan of Hip-Hop music and it's culture. I also enjoy video games, a good movies, and of course reading and writing good books during my free time. My profession is a Heavy Equipment Operator in the Construction industry.

Here is the synopsis to TWO ONE FIVE:

Have you ever felt a sense of inadequacy? Maybe you've felt stuck and couldn't see an exit from this maze of hardships? Or maybe you've always wanted a hint of hope and a small taste of success?
In this memoir, you will dig deep into the mind and life of a young Caucasian man who grew up in a predominantly African-American area of Philadelphia, PA. On the harsh city streets, this young man struggled with being misunderstood by both sides of the spectrum, considered "too ghetto" for some peers and "too proper" for others.
In the midst of trying to find his way, he had to cope with a horrific tragedy that had a profound effect on his family, as well as the tragic loss of a friend. He faced the mental turmoil of those who disapproved of him dating outside of his race, which ultimately destroyed a number of personal relationships.
Despite the obstacles in his path, this man would finally go on to become a social advocate for today's troubled youth. Not only did he overcome the bitterness of his past, he also learned how to channel his own demons without living life in the fast lane. He would rekindle his spiritual relationship with God, in whom he draws his strength and his well-being.

I hope my story will interest you. Being a new indie author, I need all the feedback and reviews of my work I can possibly get. You can purchase the Paperback at $9.99 or E-book from my author page at https://amazon.com/author/jeffjaskolka

The TWO ONE FIVE e-book is also available on most e-book platforms for purchase at $4.99.

Please let me know if you are interested in reading TWO ONE FIVE. I hope everyone has a great day and God Bless!

Michele Ceron | 89 comments Jeff: A couple of tips for you

First off you should lower the price of your kindle book. $5 is too high of a price even for a larger book, let alone one that is only 168 pages. My book is 670 pages and I have it for $3. Second, what is that on your cover? I cant tell what it is nor how it relates to your book. I got a lot of great tips on what to do and not to do from my book promoter. PM me and I can give you a few pointers and/or direct you to my book promoter.

message 1382: by Michele (new)

Michele Ceron | 89 comments oh I looked at your cover again and it appears to be an ultrasound of a baby I had to stare at it for several seconds before I could tell what it was. What does that have to do with the content of your book? Something to think about.

Sarah Katz | 2 comments Greetings, all! I'm a cyber security engineer, author of historical fiction and massive sci-fi fan.

My combined sci-fi duology "From the Void" is in the running for TV program option, so could always use reads/reviews!

My website has the first chapter of my stand-alone book "From the Void". If the synopsis piques your interest, feel free to check it out! If chapter one intrigues you, feel free to message me with your email and I will notify when the book releases.

Set on a far-future Earth where humanity has reset and evolved around five colossal megastructures, the story primarily follows Rohem, a mysterious young man able to absorb and harness solar energy. Used as a child weapon by a rogue police officer to revolt against the planet's dominant nation Tabira, Rohem eventually goes to live in Lir, the desert nation across the sea. Recently equipped with highly advanced technology from an unknown source, Tabira has begun a mission to eradicate religion across the planet in the name of scientific evolution. Studying as a doctor in Lir, Rohem and his accomplice sets out to the rain forest nation of Ayam, Tabira's first target for reform.

With Tabira's leader Eta's niece forcibly married to the Ayam chief Telo in a tense gesture of peace, the locals struggle against Tabira's punishment for failing to relinquish belief in the megastructures and their associated Zaam deities: A pathogen that transforms those infected into flesh-eating beasts every nightfall. In his mission to help the Ayam people, Rohem and his accomplice Avithia - a Lirian with a rare mutation allowing for enhanced strength and the intermittent switching of biological sex - discover the secret behind Tabira's sudden forward leap in civilization. In the process, Rohem learns who and what he is, along with the threat that awaits humanity in the void beyond Earth.

Janelle Wong | 7 comments Hi everyone! My name is Janelle Wong and I'm an author who just published her new debut novel! I am actually one of two friends who co-wrote our book together and I'm half-Taiwanese! My debut novel just came out and it is called The Obsidian, which I'm hoping to get some reviews for. It's a horror/paranormal thriller and mystery, plus some romantic elements in it. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in reading a free copy (it's currently on sale at the moment) in exchange for a review (be it good or bad.) Here's the synopsis:

"Life was nothing but a game.
People existed for her to manipulate.

The first time pop singer Zephyr steps into Shadow's mani-pedi parlour, Shadow sees right through Miss Little Perfect's glossy pink smile and shiny doe eyes. And while Shadow lets her contempt show, sweet smiling Zephyr doesn't...until Shadow feels the singer's vengeance in the form of spilled acetone razing her skin.

It's easy for Zephyr to retaliate; to inflict pain without raising a finger, though the hotel manicurist, Shadow, is her first victim to see right through her. Still, who cares? Zephyr's just toying around; life is merely a game.

Yet the longer Zephyr stays in the decadent yet unsettling five-star Obsidian Hotel, the more she'll find that while navigating this place and its endless secrets remains a game, she is no longer the gamemaster, but a player just as much as her toys...

Welcome to the Obsidian Hotel."

It is about a somewhat haunted hotel. I can't give too much away but if anyone is interested for a free copy do let me know! Thank you!!

I am interested in connecting with any other fellow readers/authors. Most of the books I read are non-fiction, although I do occasionally read fiction as well.
The last novel I read was 'Small Island' which is a brilliant read. Favourite author is Bill Bryson; very funny and very engaging!

Best wishes all and have a good day.

Wendy S. Delmater | 10 comments I'm Wendy S. Delmater, editor of Abyss & Apex magazine and I both need reviews of my books and do reviews. My most recent book is Writing the Entertaining Story, which encapuslates everything I learned about helping new writers succeed in my 15+ years of running the very new-writer-friendly A&A. I'd love some reviews of it! Ask me for a review copy.

A&A reviews science fiction and fantasy books and short story collections, but only if they are published by a small press (exception: indie works by authors A&A has previously published). I'm in charge of reviews there.

Thanks again for the warm welcome, I may be a bit coy till I find my feet, but looking forward to getting to know group members.
