So I'm sure you all saw my post about limiting the number of options for our next group read poll (if not, head on over here for a look).

We mods agreed that the FIFO queue was the best way to handle a large number of suggestions, but we want to hear your thoughts on it too.

Do you like the idea of the queue? Is 7 too many options? Not enough?

We want to hear from you! We're still working out the formula ourselves, after all. :)

Quantum (quantumkatana) | 250 comments that is good. the more active you are, the more chances you get to read something that you want to read.

lucky # 7.

Fanta Miste | 473 comments Before: All suggestions that haven't read yet are on poll.

After: The seven oldest suggestions that haven't read yet are on poll.

Is this understanding right?

That is exactly right, Fanta. :)

So since you all have had some time to reflect on it, what do you all think of the poll queue approach?

Good? Bad?

Too many choices? Too few?

I want to get your feedback so we know how to improve the poll next time, if we need to improve. :)

Fanta Miste | 473 comments I think it's good. :) First of all, give it a try!

So, resurrecting this discussion to get your thoughts.

It's come to our attention that the current poll format might not be working for the current number of suggestions we have.

So far, we've thought of three ways to have the poll (starting with the next group read poll).

Method 1: First In First Out replacing the winner
If we have 10 things to vote on, 1-7 are in one poll. Say 4 gets voted for. 4 is taken out of the poll (since it won) and 8 is added in. So we end up with 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 in the poll. Say 2 gets removed next. 9 is added in, giving us 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. This is the current way we do this.

Method 2: FIFO, replacing things that have been on the list as well as winner.
If they've been in the poll, say, three times, they'll be removed. So if we use the above example, after the third poll, 8 and 9 would say on the poll and the others would be shuffled off in favor of newer suggestions.

Method 3: FIFO, replacing everything each poll
(after 4 got removed) would be 8, 9, 10, (to rotate in those not voted on) then 1, 2, 3, 5 (starting again at the top), giving us 1,2,3,5,8,9,10 (removing 6 and 7).

So... discuss! Which method do you guys like? Or do you have your own suggestions? Please let us know your thoughts!

Terrence (grnkrby) | 347 comments I wouldn't mind seeing titles rotated out for one poll, then rotated back in during the following poll (option 2?).

Can I ask you what you think about the current poll format and what its problem is?

I personally like the current format because it's really easy for me to keep track of. ^^;;;

The problem with it is that books stay on the poll for long periods of time and can stick around poll-to-poll for all eternity. It takes a long time for newer suggestions to get on the poll.

Mike | 145 comments I'm in favor of #3 to allow all suggested titles a chance at being read.

Say something new is added today. In the current system it will be 13 cycles before it gets into the poll (there are 13 books on the list not in the current poll that would go before the new book one at a time). Even at a low assumption of 3 weeks per group read, given LNs alternate with novels for our reads it would be about a year and a half before that new LN even got a single chance to be voted on.

Tiffany Vaughn | 39 comments Hmm, I'll agree with Mike and go for method #3. Though, I'm mostly here to meet new people and discover new books. :)

Fanta Miste | 473 comments I see. When the current system, a newer suggestion won't be on the poll unless many older ones are read, and it takes a long time.

I like the method 3 too. (Though I think, to solve the problem, we will have to think how the increase of older suggestions is handled.)

I've done the rotation for this poll. Hopefully everything goes smoothly from now on. :)
