ABANDONED. Book about a wolf (or wolf dog) that is taken in by a girl

Hi! I read this book when I was much younger, so sometime in the 90s. Forgive me for the description being a bit choppy. I believe that the title began with a Q. Or the animal's name did.

1) Believe it began with the wolf/wolf dog losing its parents after wandering/being led away from a cave. It was a pup.

2) It is eventually found by a girl. I believe that she lived in a desert with her father. I think that it was hinted that she had magic. I am really unsure of this and may be confusing this point with another book...

3) Something happened to her father, I think. The book begins to go on about her maturing and this older guy (friend or co-worker to her father...) takes a creepy interest in her. I think that after this she loses the wolf/dog.

4) I believe the ending of the book has them reunited.

From my memory, the book was mostly in the viewpoint of the animal. It did have some heavy material, but I believe it was meant for teens/young adults. Any help would be much appreciated because Google and libraries have not helped. Thanks!

Summer of the Wolves by Polly Carlson-Voiles turned up while searching, but it was first published in 2012.
