ABANDONED. YA book set somewhere in the mid 1900s with a hurricane?

I've been trying to remember the name of this book for a REALLY long time and I don't remember much about it... I read it in the sixth grade as either a realistic or historical fiction book. I remember that it was about a girl age 16-18, I think, who meets this guy and falls in love immediately. But he's older and stuff and kinda shady, and the girl just lives with her single mother who is a hardcore smoker and if I remember kinda sultry and she has an affair with her daughter's dude and then the dude runs away on a boat or something and then gets caught up in a hurricane...? I might not remember much but i feel like it took place in the mid 1900s and I vaguely remember the title having something to do with lying...

Yeah it's a specific book I read it in the 6th grade and I've been looking for it ever since.
