November's additional read voted by the group members is The Rest of Us Just Live Here

The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness

What if you aren’t the Chosen One?

The one who’s supposed to fight the zombies, or the soul-eating ghosts, or whatever the heck this new thing is, with the blue lights and the death?

What if you’re like Mikey? Who just wants to graduate and go to prom and maybe finally work up the courage to ask Henna out before someone goes and blows up the high school. Again.

Because sometimes there are problems bigger than this week’s end of the world, and sometimes you just have to find the extraordinary in your ordinary life.

Even if your best friend is worshipped by mountain lions.

Just finished Chapter 3, and this just about broke my heart:

(While Mike is washing his hands for the '100th' time)
In two steps, Jared is behind me, putting his bigger, longer, stronger arms around me to pin my own against my side. he turns it into a kind of imprisoning bear hug, lifting me up and away from the sink. He just holds me there for a second, a few inches off the ground, neither of us saying anything. His forehead's against the back of my head and I can feel his breathing on my neck. I'm not exactly a small guy, but I'm thin and a bit wiry, while Jared is enormous, tall and broad and just big, big, big.
Thank God he's not a bully or he'd terrorize the school.
"Okay?" he asks quietly, after a minute.
"Okay," I whisper, swallowing the huge lump in my throat.

I've read quite a few reviews complaining that the book has no storyline and they were bored.

I agree that it may have been a little slow but otherwise I couldn't disagree more about this very unique story. It's about so much!
Family, friendship, relationships, mental illness, eating disorders, alcoholism, OCD, anxiety, self worth, sexuality (LGBTQ)

A very gentle and beautifully crafted story, with well developed and fabulous characters that totally hits the heart.
It was a reading experience that definitely made me look at myself.

5 out of 5 stars.

Virginie (chouettblog) | 350 comments I started yesterday and I can't believe how unique this is.
I don't think I have ever come across anything like it.
And I am only at the beginning of it. Cannot wait to read more!!

And I love the contrast with the abbreviated "hero" story line going on. It's like all of our lives, contrasted to the big news of wars, elections, and political upheaval and tragedies in other countries.

Virginie (chouettblog) | 350 comments I really enjoyed it!
Not enough to give it a 5* however I can definitely say I have yet to come across a read like this.

Not bad at all.

Janina (sylarana) | 692 comments I'm reading this at the moment and I love it. It's about all the things that are truly relevant and I don't find it boring at all ... it's precious.

Beachesnbooks I really like the sound of this one! Excited to get it from my library.

Janina (sylarana) | 692 comments I've finished it .. couldn't put it down. To me this is a clear 5* read .. what a wonderful, remarkable book!

And, I just loved the way it almost teases those other books out there (I'm mainly thinking of Rick Riordan) which are so popular and yet so meaningless. Not in a mean way, but .. I don't know .. just the way you might make fun of a beloved friend/sibling (not sure I'm saying this right in English).

Anyways, I think it says a lot about a person if they find this book boring or lacking storyline ... but I guess there are also people who think a film is bad if no car explodes and no one is shot. I simply cannot relate to that ...

I agree with you. I haven't finished, but I'll come back to it. It's about the others, the small moments in life that aren't heroic but from which most meaning comes.
