Years ago in, I believe, elementary school, we read either a book or short story, and I can't remember what it is titled. The story is written from the point of view of Matthew, a boy with a minutes-older twin brother named Mark (or Marc), whom Matthew says is smarter, more athletic, and more handsome than himself. There is a man in the story with a dog named Latka (or Letka). The man is assumed to be an atheist, as he laments that if he has a soul, why Latka doesn't. He doesn't want to go to heaven if Latka can't.
