Does your child enjoy reading or does he/she need a gentle push?

My daughter chooses cutesy titles, lol, like Dork Diaries (she's currently reading How to Dork Your Diary: 3 1/2.)
I "assigned" MR. POPPER'S PENGUINS this week, because, (1) She LOVES animals, (2) My dad owns the movie, so it will be a nice activity to watch it after she reads it, (3) she never read it before, and it's quite popular, (4) It gives ME a reason to read it, too ;) and, (5) Have I mentioned that she LOVES animals?
Do you assign books or does your child select and follow through with reading regularly?
