Happy reading!

So I just finished the first part and maaaan, I'm so happy I decided to listen the the audiobook. I think it is very well made and a perfect format to listen to!

As for the story, so far I feel like it is still lacking a bit. It is interesting in a way, but to be honest, what keeps me hanging on is mostly the humor especially when Ezra is involved. I laughed out loud several times. i don't know if it is just because hearing 'him' saying things is funnier than reading it... it's alittle like with some movies where you actually have to see or hear certain things to get out more emotion of it. I feel like this is the case for me with this book. I can imagine with just the book to read, it feels like it would lack emotion. But that might be only my own perception.

So far this illness is quite a mystery to me. I'm also quite anxious for McNulty. He seems hilarious, I hope he will be ok and not be affected by this aggressiveness the illness seems to invoke.

What do you guys think so far? And do you feel like Katy is some kind of Robot as well? :'D Seriously, it could be just her character (she even states it like that one time) but still... she is kinda boring to me. What do you guys think of her??

adam (adamdubrueler) currently on page 100. I have a few feelings: confusion, unsure, and weird.

t. (lavidaenquotes) Woah. McNulty, I really hope he's ok.

So, as far as the story goes, I'm pretty hooked. It gets confusing at times with the whole change of formats (from chat log to transcript of video footage, to classified docs, etc) but that adds to the fun.

The characters, I like Ezra quite a lot, he's funny and sweet and tries to act and sound tough (like when talking to Jimmy) and then he sends that rose to Kady and is all sweets and candies. And he's also pretty funny (I can imagine how listening to him say all the things he says can be really fun). But Kady... hmm... still unsure how I feel about her. It's like too much of a tough, frozen, noo feelings kinda hero, and it feels a bit forced at times. And the guy she talks to, I like him the least. I don't know, his snarky, sassy comments just don't do it for me. I know he's supposed to be impaired when it comes to social interaction, but what he says and how he says it is like he's trying to be a cool guy and for me, it doesn't come across.

I have a few questions: do we know what happened to Kady's mom? She's supposed to have made it out, but was she in the Copernicus or is she in the Hypatia or where? When Ezra asked about her, Kady ignored it. Twice.

Second, what is it with this 'chum' word? Haven't heard it before and now everyone is a chum...? At first I thought it was an Ezra thing but no. Am I missing here on some cool kids slang, or is this supposed to be a futuristic cool kids slang?

I guess the word "chum" is kinda like the word "shank" in the Maze Runner series. It's just how they address each other? I'm not too sure though haha

Wow, I just finished the first part, and I seriously don't know what to feel.

At first I thought that disease was pretty minor, because what it did was just making people psychologically unstable. However, after reading the report about the killings in bay 4, it really scared me. I seriously hope that McNulty would be fine. It's nice to see that McNulty is not only funny but also very very brave.

To this point, I'm still not too attached to any characters yet. I guess this is a problem of all those reports and stuff, as it's hard for me to relate to the characters when it's not written in first narration.

Fhina (fhinabasbair) Man, I finally got to finish the first part and damn, the book is good! @madamereadsalot actually made me curious about the audio book now.

Anyway, so far I really find it super interesting and can't wait to read on. I the disease is very scary and at the a same time, I'm curious about it.

I really like Ezra and McNulty so far. Not so sure about Kady yet. She seems to thaw at last.

Robin (featherlyreads) 🪺🪶 (featherlyreads) | 2 comments I'm reading this on my Kindle and am really disappointed with how it looks, the font is really small and I find it hard to follow at times. Does anyone else feel this way?
I like the concept but I wish there was more narration to it.
I also agree that Ezra's use of the word "chum" is a little weird.

t. (lavidaenquotes) @Robin: maybe it's a Kindle thing? I haven't had any problems with the physical version.

Precious Sagbodje (sirpresh) | 5 comments I read about this book...what's stopping me from actually reading it is that it was tagged 'romance'...I don't like romance. So my question is for those who have read it so far is romance a main feature of the novel?

Fear not. Ok, so the main reason our heroine fights her way through this chaos is mainly a romantic one, yes. But there's waaaay more to this story than the relationship between Kady and Ezra. You may find a few cheesy parts and you may gag a little bit, I won't deny it, but that ammounts to very little if you take the whole thing in.

I can assure you that romance is definitely not a big part in this book :)

Thanks! I'm definitely going to give it a try now

Icy (ynwamicasa) | 2 comments At first the reports and files were really confusing and I found it hard to understand what was happening. But after 100 pages I started to get how the story goes on. I’m not sure how I feel about it so far but hope Jamie is alright.

Audra (bookishendeavor) | 5 comments After finishing the first part, I'm still having issues getting totally immersed in the story. I feel like the characters haven't been developed enough yet to really get hooked to the book. Kady seemed like just a normal girl and we find out that she now has crazy computer hacking skills? Where did that come from?? And who is she working with? Also I'm just waiting to see how Ezra's character develops. What happened with his mom? Why did this cause so many issues with Kady? Who was his father? It seems like he was an important person, but I could've missed something.

And throughout this whole process the enemy is tracking down the Alexander and the Hypatia while some disease is spreading. There are so many storylines going on and no answers.

Makenzie Taylor | 3 comments Ahhh! Ok so I am new to the book dragons group and this'll be the first book I read as a part of it! And now I've finally been able to read the first part of this book soo, yayy lol
First thought as I began reading was excitement to see that this story is being told in a completely different format than what I'm used to, yay for changing it up! However, it's made understanding the characters and background story somewhat confusing and hard to connect with. There's literally no introduction into the world they live in so I had to assume and kind of make up a lot of things for myself. Hopefully the story elaborates a little more as I get further in.
As for the characters- I still don't know much about the main characters' stories, but I know that will eventually come along and I'm looking forward to it 'cause I know there will be plenty of drama to soak up! Ezra is hilarious and Kady is super sassy (at least on the outside) so I think they fit together perfectly, and I'm dying to know more about their "relationship"! Must. Keep. Reading.
It's too early to tell just how crazy this story will get, but with this pathogenic warfare starting up I think that's just the tip of the iceberg. I'm cringing while reading some of these parts but that's how I know it's going to be an intensely great book! I think... But who doesn't love a dystopian sci-if romance!?

Jenny | 10 comments I'm really enjoying this so far! The humor is great! I didn't think I'd be laughing this much, but I find myself laughing out loud quite a bit.
I'm really liking the characters and discovering parts of the mystery piece by piece. It's like research, but fun. I didn't expect to feel for the characters as much as I am, due to the format. However, I'm very sad about a particular character. I won't name names because it seems not everyone posting has gotten to page 171, and I don't want to spoil anything.
I can't wait to get deeper into the book!

Biblio-Athena (athraja) | 21 comments McNulty!!! Oh man, the last line by Lt McCall made my heart fill up with tears. Ezra and McNulty have this hilarious dynamic going on so I hope he's still alive.

So far I'm enjoying the book. It's super creative and gives you si many perspectives which gives it a lot of personality I think. I don't think it's important to follow majy characters, consisting quite a few names are introduced. So far it's Kady, Ezra, CitB, McNulty and Dorian I guess. I've forgotten all the other names already.

Some of the technical stuff is hard to follow but I don't really go about trying to understand tbh. Still confuses me though. I feel like I'm reading something that's a combination of Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica.

I have also made some assumptions about this pathogen and Ezra. He was really close to the refinery. I'm hoping my assumptions don't turn out to be true. He is adorable and funny. And man it must have taken him a loooong while to make that rose. That's a lot of effort from a guy who pretty much asked for a break up there. Kady is pretty cool. I like that she is so no nonsense, but has this really emotional side as seen in her diary. ByteMe though....haha...hilarious
