I'm very open to reading from authors I've never read before. Some of my favorite authors/books have been picks I've just stumbled on. Based on the rating and reviews, I had high hopes for Invention of Wings. Sad to say I just didn't care for it.
The book follows the POVs of Sarah Grimke (a Southern girl who dreams of a free world and being a lawyer) and Hetty/Handful (a slave in her fam's home). The book starts out when the girls are young and goes until they are middle aged. I very much enjoyed reading about their early years, but about half way through I found the book to be dreadfully boring and slow.
This book DID have one of the most interesting parallels brought up about that time period (1800s). Sarah is very driven and wants more out of life and education than what is available to her as a woman. Handful commented to her that although she was truly the slave - Sarah's mind could be considered one as well as many tried to force her into being less than what she was.
