Amazing breadth of detail of rural farming, mining, ranching life in mid-century America and a look into the hearts and minds of the people who are a part of it. As we read about ongoing farmer suicides today, we understand that it has always been so (this is not the focus of the book). What strikes me most is understanding people who choose to be removed from the prototypical American life. Missing folk whose absences are not thoroughly questioned (Loyal & Billie's families make excuses for family members that didn't fit in) are so foreign to today's Facebook, media and information oriented world.
