Annie | 81 comments Hello everyone! I need advice once again if you don't mind giving it to me! There've been a lot of changes in my life recently and they have all sort of conspired to bring me to a big decision: I've been offered a chance to move to Ireland (Dublin to be specific), and if I can get the arrangements made in time, I'm going to take it!

I was planning this year's vacation for June 27 so if I'm going to make this a one-way trip I don't have much time... I'm currently enrolled in classes here in the States but I've discovered that there are 4 schools in Dublin that will allow me to keep my current educational funding. They are:

University of Dublin Trinity College
American College Dublin
Dublin City University
University College Dublin

I have lodging sorted already due to the generosity of some dear friends, and I have some job opportunities that I'm looking into at the moment. The main thing I'm unclear on is the visa... I intend to work and attend school (at least part-time on both) so I'm not sure whether I should apply for a student visa or a work visa. Could anyone offer any helpful information there?

I'd also value any input that any of our Irish members can give me regarding the 4 schools listed above... I am still deciding which to apply for. My degree is somewhat flexible (undergraduate) but I had planned to do either Business or Psychology. Are there any horror stories or praises that could be offered for any of the 4?

I'm aware as well that the American resume is formatted differently than the Irish CV... Do any of you know of any good resources I could use to help me tailor my job applications to fit the standard used in Ireland?

These are some of the main questions I have at this point, but any input that you want to offer would be appreciated! This opportunity has come up quite unexpectedly, so I'm in a rush to get everything settled and I really don't want to miss this chance.

Thanks again!

-Annie

Paul As far as I know the standard student work visa for Ireland allows up to 20 hours of work. Not to sure beyond that.
Trinity College is the most central of the four colleges mentioned and is probably the easiest to get to and from on public transport.
Trinity and UCD would be far more prestigious than the other two and there qualifications would carry more weight in general both in Ireland and abroad. DCU can be a bit more awkward to get to than the others and the American College would be the newer and least known of them all.

Annie | 81 comments Thank you for the information, Paul! I'd love to go to Trinity, so if I can be accepted that may be the winner! It sounds like the best choice all the way around so far!

Annie | 81 comments Thank you, Jamie Lynn! Right now I'm fairly well terrified, but it is very exciting! We'll see if I'm able to pull this off in time...

Paul Trinity is right in the centre of the city so you'll enjoy the location. couldn't commenting the philosophy or business to be honest. best of luck with the application.

Annie | 81 comments Well then move with me, Jamie Lynn! ;) I've decided that if I'm ever going to do this, now is the best time... I'm young, single, and have no children... I'm not tied to any particular job or career yet... So why not? I've done well enough for myself to have some money saved up and will have enough to cover my expenses for a while as I look for a job. I already take a trip to Ireland every summer, so I might as well just go ahead and move.

Annie | 81 comments Paul, I just saw your last comment. Thank you for the well wishes! :)

Seraphina Here's a pretty good cv site
http://www.irishjobs.ie/careeradvice/...
Trinity always looks good on a cv as does dcu. Don't know too much about the other colleges.

Annie | 81 comments Thank you for the CV site, Seraphina! That will be really helpful. :)

Seraphina And if you do make the move you have plenty Irish friends to call on :)

message 11: by Annie (new)

Annie | 81 comments I'll be sure to do that, Seraphina! I take an annual vacation to Ireland anyway, so I'll definitely be there around the end of June and early July one way or the other.

Susan | 4707 comments Annie, what a wonderful opportunity. I am glad you are going to take the chance and do this. I doubt you'd ever regret it. I wish I had done it when I was your age. You go, girl.
