Age appropriateness

What would be the appropriate age to read these books? I have a nine-year old who is a very strong reader. I am not as concerned about his understanding all aspects of the story, as much as inappropriate content for his age. Is there sex? Is there bloody, gory violence? Is there foul language? Thanks for any insight you can provide.

Nine might be a tad young for these. Not a lot of crude language and sex, but there are violent scenes, fighting, blood etc, that might be a bit graphic, if that is a concern. There is however a young adult version of these as well as many others in this series that might be more appropriate as well as enjoyable for him. (I believe the same authors wrote a bunch)It has been a long time since I have read them myself. (I'm old now lol)

My sons enjoyed the Dragonlance series starting when they were about ten years old. I read the books with them to answer any questions, and just to share the books with them. There is some blood, some adult situations, for example, fighting for the top position in an army of bad guys. However, if you talk with your nine-years-old about the situation, it can become a very good moral lesson.

Spoilers, I guess.

I don't recall foul language beyond "damn." There are many bloody, stabby deaths, and I recall two mentions of rape: one explains the half-elf Tanis, whose elven mother was assaulted by a human and resulted in his being a "half-breed," largely rejected by both cultures. The other I can recall occurs when a Draconian attempts to rape a girl who is a major character in the story. A friend of hers manages to stab the soldier to death and rescues her.

I think you should read the books yourself. They're fast reads for an adult- you can bang one out in a couple of hours. Ultimately, you know your child best, right?

I think I started this series (out of order) when I was 9 or 10. Really got into them (and the dragonlance series as a whole). I don't think there is much in the series that is seriously inappropriate for a 9 year old, but of course that's just my opinion. I have a daughter who is that age (almost 10) and I would be ok with her reading them.

there is sex, lot of violence, foul language. nothing he can't see in television
