Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments **chuckles** That is probably why I gave it 2½ stars... because it is 202 years old. ☺

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) | 14528 comments Ditto, Karen. Didn't make a lot of sense. Killing all the animals they came across.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Yeah, Karen. I know my mom read it to us when we were kids and I don't remember all the animal killing.

It was always one of my favorite rides at Disneyland.

Heather L (wordtrix) I finished this a while back, but never seemed to find my way back to the discussion. I pretty much agree with what others have said. As a fantasy-adventure story written 200 years ago, it's not bad. Not completely realistic by today's standards -- especially with so many disparate species on one small island -- but maybe it seemed so when originally written, with so little known about the world.

I also disliked the fact that they seemed to kill first and wonder about it later. Killing in self-defense is one thing. Hunting for food -- and there was the need to preserve some meats to tide them over the rainy season -- is one thing. But to outright kill everytime you happened upon an unfamiliar animal . . . that's something completely different and hard to accept.

I don't remember ever seeing the movie in its entirety, though I have a vague memory of a race with one of them riding an ostrich, so I can't honestly compare it to the book. Guess I'll have to watch for the opportunity to see it again.

Good point, Heather.

The movie was much more lighthearted, even with the pirate kidnapping.
