Mary (broomemarygmailcom) I agree with everything you wrote, definitely BUT I also think that thr real harm is a disrespect and callous attitude towards human life. I truely believe humanity is devalued by these shows. At one point-I have very limited telvevision- there were FOUR CSI shows on the air at one time! I truly felt that we were being desensitized to the horror of violence and death and all dignity for the dead was removed. I did not like (in fact it sickened me to see cold, dead bodies on slabs with knives cutting into them) and organs thrown into stainless steel basins. Especially with the dialogue of the what should have been unspeakable acts that human beings can and will do to others so I did not watch much. Other shows are following in their wake...Criminal Minds is definitely becoming more a CSI type show this year and I believe the ratings have risen.

This is absolutely true. I went through a period where I didn't have a tv and in most of the socializing at work there was no way to join in any conversation because they were all about tv shows. - not about books or hobbies or world events.

Fanficfan44--I understand that completely. No one in the states wants to talk about World Events at all, it seems to me. My son says it makes him feel stupid as he doesn't find facts anywhere, just opinion-that includes Tv and written. This from someone about to finish PHD in Mathematics! "It makes me feel dumb!"
I digress, I have watched daytime TV-no cable and it serves a purpose I guess if you are deeply depressed and when I have been very depressed it is like an addiction. Ha, like a color picture book to stare at and escape. I think many find the same comfort in the CSI type shows...always pretty people in the cast and you may wake up long enough to see a mottled, ashen, dead body with insects crawling out of various orifices or maybe even two. Ugh.

When I have NO TV, I must admit that I do miss some of my shows...Like 24 about to start and I do not get the channel clearly.

If I understand you here, David you are sort of saying that broadcasting companies have the right to create and broadcast any show and I agree. But I do wish they would show a little more discretion and perhaps not ALWAYS act on ratings and greed. There are many stories to tell and when you put CSI on 4 nights a week in prime time your choices are decreased and that does not include the reruns of same shows on cable. Like Law and Order a good program but do you really need episode after episode 24/7? That is a waste of airspace after a while. I will say that if you have a good knowledge of computers then you can watch almost anything you want and that is what I do...kids have even set it up that it somehow magically appears on my TV screen! So younger people are choosing differently. A lot of them are more discreet in what they watch. The phenomena of "reality" TV (although nothing real about it) is something that I thought would be a passing phase but 10 years later it is still here and booming...I have to say that I put the CSI shows in that category as well even though I know they are not. I just find it very sad that people want to fill their heads with that crap.
Most disturbing of all to me is that there was some sort of poll here in US asking people where they get their news and the most "trusted" newsman in America..The Daily Show with Jon Stewart won overwhelmingly! Do people really not know that he is a comedienne? I really find that very scary! I hope we do a little better in teaching critical thinking skills in the future.
Also I do not begrudge you your sports...I happen to really enjoy basketball. :)

Marianne Williams | 379 comments I watch CSI Las Vegas, Criminal Minds, Elementary and Hawaii Five-O because I like Crime Drama. I know it is entertainment and some of it not real. The most damaging aspect of the CSI effect is the impact on juries. Some experts blamed CSI for the not guilty verdict against Casey Anthony because the forensics were inconclusive. On CSI, all the experts agree and it is conclusive, sometimes in reality there is a lot of grey areas.

I do watch TV but mainly AcornTV on my roku - I love all the mystery series - Blue Murder, Midsomer Murders, Vera, etc. I also watch The Walking Dead.

I am not a big sports person and I can't stand all those reality TV shows. I have had periods where we didn't have a TV at all but that has been a while

Everything you wrote, I agree-the greed of ratings, the changing channels and most especially the news media. We have the same problem here...Some of us call those people Sheeple...:).

I love your line "in reality there is a lot of grey area" So true in most aspects of life as well. I was busy during the whole Casey Andrew trial and did not really follow it but did see her face now and then and always thought they would never convict her-because of her looks alone.

Mary (broomemarygmailcom) Here is what I mean when I say CSI type shows desensitize us. This was a headline on news site tonight...

"Police Find Corpse Sitting on Sofa Watching TV "

And what did I do? I burst out laughing! Sick but true, I confess.

Oh Dear...

Hello Mary: The corpse watching TV was in a CSI episode. I agree all media--TV, movies, video games all contribute to desensitize us to violence.
