After the conservative justices gutted the Voting Rights Act in Shelby County v. Holder, right-wing media complained that criticisms of the legal challenge were overblown because other provisions of the VRA remain intact to fight voter suppression. But now some of those same right-wing media figures have begun to flip-flop on that position, arguing that another crucial component of the VRA is unconstitutional as well.
The entire right (nutjob) wing of yer current SCOTUS is all for original intent, unless, of course, it's the original intent behind the Voting Rights Act.
May I suggest that a very good overview of the illegal voter suppression committed by the likes of Karl effing Rove, is Greg Palast's Billionaires and Ballot Bandits. Essentially, it takes a state's Secretary or State to bring charges against Karl Rove, but he rather conveniently only targets Red States, and when a Secretary of State doesn't wanna play ball, for instance by, say, bringing charges against Mr. Rove, the National Party/Machine just happens to fire said Secretary of State. It's insane.
I do a mini protest in my state of NH. I refuse to show an ID. Then I have to fill out an affidavit which will be sent to the secretary of state. I still get to vote. I get a postcard to fill out a few months later. I swear I am who I say I am. I want to get as many NHerites as possible to join me. The other day I mentioned it to someone, and she said, "Oh, you're the one." So I guess people have been talking about it.
