Amber | 6 comments The book I am trying to find is about a group of people that get put on a ship going to a convention to bid on a new planet, the ship is called the ARK i think, the aliens who are selling the planet are nicknames shellies, the ships have weapons travel through wormholes, there is some space combat. The cover was black with maybe a blue circle in the middle with a spaceship in the circle. fairly modern would say written in the 1990's or later more likely late 90's being as i read the book in 03 i think. about 300 pages long? The earth i think is split into different factions the book follows the England branch, they live in a huge space station. they use these handheld computers they call AI. The prince travels on the ship. That's about all I got, any replies are much appreciated!!!

Justanotherbiblophile | 1814 comments I've not read it. And my google-fu is not strong enough to overcome the inertia of vague descriptions (no fault of yours, check out one of mine: "author's name: 'George', asteroids, end of the world, blah, blah, blah.")

Your subject line for the thread is good enough (unlike some users who fail and thus I refuse to even view their threads). Maybe put the 'e' back in space-travel. Maybe some verbs? But the three key nouns work pretty dang well. Hmm, maybe mention 'spacetravel via wormhole to bid on empty? planet owned? by shellies'

Description seems good, if someone has read it and has a working memory, then it should spark them. Of course, any other details you can dredge out of memory would help.

Only other thing I'd suggest is break out the 'about the book' stuff from the description - but that's a quibble, and not necessary by any means.

Amber | 6 comments Thanks for the tips updated. My E key hates me on this keyboard only works about 50% of the time :)

Amber | 6 comments Ohh and there are multiple books in a series. That's why I'm looking for it, I read the first and never bought the second to find out what happened.

Marilyn (shumpgullion) | 28 comments I was intrigued by this, because it's uncomfortably close to something I'm working on! So, uh, I haven't read it myself, but from Googling I'm going to say
The Ark: His Majesty's Starship #1 by Ben Jeapes fits the bill.

The Ark by Ben Jeapes

Read the reviews on this page for some more plot details, for example:

"An invitation is made to the good people of Earth to share a part of the universe with a race of intelligent (and beautifully delineated) aliens. Mike Gilmore is instructed to put together a team of spacefaring professionals, but he must also take a headstrong prince, who is not all that he seems to be; aside from the fact that he’s foolishly reluctant to strap himself down just before the ship is “boosting at one point three gees,” he also secretes industrial-sized explosive weapons on the ship, without the captain’s consent or knowledge."

Justanotherbiblophile | 1814 comments Wow. That totally looks like the correct book Marilyn.

Can't wait to see if Amber thinks so.

Then she can move this thread to the possibly solved folder, or the solved folder (if we're lucky).

So, you're writing a book on this theme? Have you checked out Brin's very-inhabited universe? For planet bidding bureaucracies...

Amber | 6 comments Marilyn Thank you That is the right one! :) Cant believe you figured it i have been searching for days.

Is that David Brin? I haven't read any of his stuff yet. My WIP doesn't quite have planet-bidding, but it's in the same realm. If you can think of any specific Brin books that would be good to start with, I'd love a recommendation. :)

Justanotherbiblophile | 1814 comments Yeah, David Brin.

Hmm. Well, if you wanted to just do focused reading, I'd hit _Brightness Reef_ in the Uplift universe - but that's jumping right into a complex universe (granted, 1st of a new trilogy; ie: some explanatory-ness). If you've got time to read 'em all, start with _Sundiver_ and/or _Startide Rising_

There's also some dealing in planets (trade planets for services) in Zahn's Cobra universe, iirc: _Cobra Bargain_

Those are the couple that come to the top of my mind right this instant.
