Jack | 21 comments I don't want to seem like I am copying GRRM but I really like his idea for a civil war book. I am thinking of writing a book series with the civil war/end of the world plot but set in Asia instead of Europe. I would not be copying his ASOIAF books but I would have countries that seem like Japan, China, Korea and the Mongols. It would have a lot of magic and mythology i.e. gods and immortals coming down to earth in the later books. I also want younger readers as well as older readers to enjoy the series. Any comments, critics, ideas for plots etc? They are welcome.

Silvana (silvaubrey) I'd love to read more fantasy novels set in Asia. Recently I read Ken Liu's Grace of Kings and it has similarities with ASoIAF (island kingdoms with their individual god/protector fighting over each other over a High King position). It was quite good, love the world building and the mix with steampunk-ish technology.

Hannah Kelly (herfictionalfelicities) An Indian based story would also be cool.

It's a good idea. I like that. And I'm a Chinese, born and raised. If you're still working on it and want some tips (better be specific), I'll be glad to help.

Slick | 53 comments I wouldn't set it in Japan. I would use an Asian setting though.
GRRM used an entire new world, and took a lot of inspiration from real world events. Valyrian Empire= Roman Empire , Ghis empire= Greeks, Starks vs Lannisters= War of the Roses, the wall = Hadrian's wall... The red wedding= the black dinner and the glencoe massacre

If you really set it in Japan you would be either writing a historical report or alternate reality.. Make a new fantasy world and use a lot of inspiration from real events, make your magic system really unique..

It's all up to you of course but that's what I suggest, it would be tricky balancing young readers and new readers..

Ross Bauer (nightlightknight) | 392 comments Certainly, seeing as that for the most part the books focus on court intrigue and shifting loyalties, two elements that were integral to hierarchical power systems historically.
