Gabriella Phillips Marge Hello,

I’m a professor of English and a nonfiction writer at Davidson College who is interested in researching an essay about book clubs in North Carolina. Would you, as a book club participant, be interested in sharing your experience with me? I’ve attached a list of questions below should you wish to share information about your book club. Please feel free to skip over any that do not apply to your book club or your experience. Your reply will go to Gabriella Barrier, my student research assistant, who will organize and share the information with me.

You can reach me, if need be, at 704.894.2257. For more information about me, please consult my web site at the address below.

Questions:
What is your book club named?
When was your book club founded?
How long have you been a member of your book club?
When do you meet? How long do you meet?
Where are your meetings?
Do you have a general format for your meetings?
How many members do you have? Do you have a cap for how many members you will take?
Are you accepting new members?
What are the demographics of your club?
How often does the number of members fluctuate?
Do you focus on any particular genre, author, or time period?
Who selects the books?
How do you choose which books you read?
What are some of the books you have covered recently?
Can you think of anything distinctive about your club versus others you may know about?
Which meeting was the most memorable and why?
How do you handle different readings of the same text?

With thanks for your attention,

Cynthia Lewis
