Jack | 23 comments I don't want it to seem exactly like it but I like the ideas in ASOIAF but for more middle age readers as well as adults

So, Jack, what are you asking here? You want us to give you Martin type ideas for a middle grader fantasy series? You're planning to write one then?

Martin Wilsey | 29 comments Isn't that kind of the writers job? Your job? Be original man!

message 8: by Jack (new)

Jack | 23 comments Yes it's just I don't want to seem like I am copying Martin that's all

Martin Wilsey | 29 comments I wasn't just referring to Martin. Us. Forget what Martin wrote, don't ask other writers for their ideas. Take a walk in the woods and let your imagination run wild. Take notes all the time. Make outlines. Do character profiles. world build. YOUR world.

Go to the library and find the oldest encyclopedia. Look up descriptions of lands and peoples.

Think.Do the work. It's the FUN part!!

Asking us is lazy. Don't sell yourself short.

Besides we'll just lie to you and give you the plot from an old Arthur Clark story!

Michele | 274 comments Pick a country (hopefully not England), pick a time period (hopefully not just "medieval"), go to Wikipedia and search that time period in that country for wars/civil wars/coup d'états/new inventions (there will be many).

Choose whatever seems most interesting and find a few books that focus on that. Then mash it up with fantasy elements, mess with the maps, change all the names, tweak the plots, tone it down for youngsters, and voila!

Phil J | 329 comments Martins starting point was the war of the roses, so I guess you could start with the hundred years war or something.

Grady Brown Nowadays, whenever we read a fantasy book that is about someone trying to usurp someone and take the throne, we think of Game of Thrones. However, the truth is that those kinds of medieval politics always appear in fantasy works in one form or another. The reason for this is because fantasy as a genre is largely based on medieval Europe and during those days there was always someone trying to overthrow someone else for the throne. This was the case when Henry IV usurped Richard II, or William the Conqueror usurping Harold Godwinson, or Edward IV usurping Henry VI, or Henry VII usurping Richard III. The list goes on and on into infinity. Therefore, when someone writes a fantasy story about someone trying to usurp a dynasty and claim a throne for themselves that does not mean that they are basing it on Game of Thrones.

Ben Rowe (benwickens) | 431 comments Game of Thrones draws heavily from the War of the Roses if I remember right in terms of inspiration but also tries to be something of an anti-fantasy in that whilst it has magic, dragons, zombies etc. it focuses on very human and non magical conflicts. Then whilst there are noble heroes they tend to die for their foolhardy trust in the human condition.

If you think of a period of history (Russian Civil War or Great Game for two geographically similar but otherwise very different examples of interesting times ) might be a good one - to not base it on but draw inspiration in terms of events, character etc. and keep true to the ideas of having magical elements but not drawing them to the centre then you are off to a good start.

But remember that we are really past the point now of dragons, zombies etc. for fantastical elements -you are going to need to draw on more original or under used elements
