Hahaha Karen, yes, the gang's back! :)
Hi Margaret! *waves frantically* Couldn't resist following you! ;)

I have London waiting next to read.
:(
You can still pop in for discussion!
I do want to read London too. Maybe if I'm not over Rutherfurd at the end of this one I'll get there during the challenge

Sounds good, Karen!

Hi Lisa! Hi Srividya! And Karen! I am always following you watching what you are reading and your reviews. I am so happy that you pointed this Buddy Read out to me. :D
Stalker
Haha
I do the same. So nice to watch what people are reading and I love checking out reviews!

I'm starting the audio a few days early because it is 38 hours :o
And I picked up the paperback from the library today. My other library only had the Large Print version.... can you imagine the size of that? lol!!
I'm glad I have the book aswell because there are maps and a family tree at the beginning which will hopefully help to keep everything straight

I've finished the first five chapters, and I think I'm getting my head around all the characters. I definitely recommend getting your hards on a physical copy of the book if you are going to listen to the audio, as it has really helped me to reference back to the family tree, and also to check the time period I'm in on a chapter when I have to stop the audio between chapters and go back to it later.
I find it interesting that the time line isn't linear. It kind of surprised me when we went right back to the 13th century! I've loved the descriptions and history given of the statur of liberty and eiffel tower. I also learnt something new with the origins of the phrase "plaster of paris"! I don't really have any favbourite characters or family yet as it is still a bit early, but I'm finding the book quite engaging. I do like Rutherfurd's style of writing.

I've got my copy ready to go... but I've got to finish another 700 + pages book first.
Chapter 6
I don't know alot of this period of history, so although I know the Jews have been persecuted for centuries, I found this chapter quite fascinating. Especially the choice that Jacob made. To modern, logical, sensibilities this seems like the only choice to make, but - of course - religion is not a logical choice and I can't imagine the emotional burden this gave him.
I'm about half way through chapter 7 and I'm enjoying the Thomas storyline and descriptions of building the Eiffel Tower :)

Chapter 7
I do like how Rutherfurd take's small facts in history and builds a story around it. I had no idea (view spoiler)
As I'm istening to the audio I found the scenes between Thomas and Pepe (view spoiler)
I was expecting Edith (view spoiler)

Kristen
It took me about 5 chapters and lots of referencing the family tree to get my head around the characters!
Good point about this being a different history of Paris ; I totally agree. I am learning quite a lot!!

No problems Chris.
I'm taking my time with this on audio and I keep having other books push their way in for TT goals ;)
Chapter 8
I had to listen to this one twice, and the start of it three times. I'm not sure why. I think the dramatic shift in time periods between some of the chapters throws me off. I really wanted to stick with Thomas' story I guess as chapter 7 really engaged me.
I'm now part way through chapter 9, but I need to pause for a day or two as I have to finish the cookie book for Tower Teams ;)

The history is really pretty good. I expect that from Rutherfurd and he delivers.

Just started on chapter 5 and beginning to enjoy Thomas Gascon character, so much history n this book, really enjoying it......

Chapter 12&13
Oh it is nice to have two chapters in the same timeline!
I've only just started chapter 13, but wanted to comment on James Fox. I loved (view spoiler)

I was so annoyed with Marc when he admitted the affair to his father and didn't care about what will happen to Corinne.
So it made me very happy when Jules said he would provide for her..."
I liked this part of the story, too. It's amazing how complicated it all became.

Gosh I need to catch up with you ladies. I was a little surprised to read about racism towards the Jews, And to discover the Catholic Church didn't care for Jews as well. now on to chapter 6
No problems Kristen, take your time!
Yes, the persecution of the Jews that was described really took me by surprise too

All good Lisa. It is a big one! I've been occassionally stopping to fit in other books too.
I would recommend reading it in chapters or a chunk of chapters for the shorter ones to reduce the confusion of charactes and time period :)

I've only been once and it was about 12 years ago and part of a very big round-the-world trip, so although I have fond memories (epecially of Notre Dame and the Louvre) it was one stop in a long list of amazing places
