What is a Buddy Read?

This is an "Informal Buddy Read"
An “Informal Buddy Read” doesn’t have a discussion leader and participants are asked to consider some generic questions when making comments about the book. An example is here.

Book Synopsis:
From the grand master of the historical novel comes a dazzling epic portrait of Paris that leaps through centuries as it weaves the tales of families whose fates are forever entwined with the City of Light. As he did so brilliantly in London: The Novel and New York: The Novel, Edward Rutherfurd brings to life the most magical city in the world: Paris. This breathtaking multigenerational saga takes readers on a journey through thousands of years of glorious Parisian history

I do want to read London too. Maybe if I'm not over Rutherfurd at the end of this one I'll get there during the challenge

I'm starting the audio a few days early because it is 38 hours :o
And I picked up the paperback from the library today. My other library only had the Large Print version.... can you imagine the size of that? lol!!

I'm glad I have the book aswell because there are maps and a family tree at the beginning which will hopefully help to keep everything straight

I've finished the first five chapters, and I think I'm getting my head around all the characters. I definitely recommend getting your hards on a physical copy of the book if you are going to listen to the audio, as it has really helped me to reference back to the family tree, and also to check the time period I'm in on a chapter when I have to stop the audio between chapters and go back to it later.

I find it interesting that the time line isn't linear. It kind of surprised me when we went right back to the 13th century! I've loved the descriptions and history given of the statur of liberty and eiffel tower. I also learnt something new with the origins of the phrase "plaster of paris"! I don't really have any favbourite characters or family yet as it is still a bit early, but I'm finding the book quite engaging. I do like Rutherfurd's style of writing.

message 25: by Margaret (new) - added it

Margaret (everlastinggrace) ooh I can't wait. I might check the book out now just in case someone grabs it before I do. Fun to hear your comments Karen, you are paving the way for this read.

Plethora (bookworm_r) | 2239 comments I'm going to try and participate, I have the book. Are we going to have a pseudo-schedule?

message 27: by Lisa - (Aussie Girl) (last edited Nov 29, 2015 09:09PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments No, a bookworm. A very relaxed buddy read just comment as the mood takes you. Spoiler tags are useful if you are going to divulge an important plot point.

I've got my copy ready to go... but I've got to finish another 700 + pages book first.

Chapter 6

I don't know alot of this period of history, so although I know the Jews have been persecuted for centuries, I found this chapter quite fascinating. Especially the choice that Jacob made. To modern, logical, sensibilities this seems like the only choice to make, but - of course - religion is not a logical choice and I can't imagine the emotional burden this gave him.

I'm about half way through chapter 7 and I'm enjoying the Thomas storyline and descriptions of building the Eiffel Tower :)

Chapter 7

I do like how Rutherfurd take's small facts in history and builds a story around it. I had no idea (view spoiler)
As I'm istening to the audio I found the scenes between Thomas and Pepe (view spoiler)

I was expecting Edith (view spoiler)

Kristen Benevides | 13 comments Wow Karen, impressive..... I just started chapter two, and to keep my self on track, and not be confused, I wrote all the characters names down with highlights. I'm really enjoying reading the history of France that is something other than WWI WWII. I find myself falling in love with France, I google all the names of famous places to have a visual....... This will take me a while to read!

Kristen

It took me about 5 chapters and lots of referencing the family tree to get my head around the characters!

Good point about this being a different history of Paris ; I totally agree. I am learning quite a lot!!

Chris (cdavies1951) | 2192 comments Starting tomorrow - sorry, running a little late.

No problems Chris.

I'm taking my time with this on audio and I keep having other books push their way in for TT goals ;)

Chapter 8
I had to listen to this one twice, and the start of it three times. I'm not sure why. I think the dramatic shift in time periods between some of the chapters throws me off. I really wanted to stick with Thomas' story I guess as chapter 7 really engaged me.
I'm now part way through chapter 9, but I need to pause for a day or two as I have to finish the cookie book for Tower Teams ;)

Chris (cdavies1951) | 2192 comments I'm on audio, too, and have no idea what chapter I'm on, but I'm about half way. It took me a little while to get into this one, but I'm loving it now. The skipping in time is a little difficult to adjust to. I love the Belle Epoch sections.

The history is really pretty good. I expect that from Rutherfurd and he delivers.

Kristen Benevides | 13 comments Hello,

Chapter 12&13
Oh it is nice to have two chapters in the same timeline!
I've only just started chapter 13, but wanted to comment on James Fox. I loved (view spoiler)

Chris (cdavies1951) | 2192 comments Karen wrote: "Chapter 9

I liked this part of the story, too. It's amazing how complicated it all became.

Kristen Benevides | 13 comments Chapter 6

Gosh I need to catch up with you ladies. I was a little surprised to read about racism towards the Jews, And to discover the Catholic Church didn't care for Jews as well. now on to chapter 6

No problems Kristen, take your time!
Yes, the persecution of the Jews that was described really took me by surprise too

All good Lisa. It is a big one! I've been occassionally stopping to fit in other books too.
I would recommend reading it in chapters or a chunk of chapters for the shorter ones to reduce the confusion of charactes and time period :)

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 6397 comments I made a start. I know I am going to enjoy it as I have been lucky enough to holiday in Paris three times so I know the city quite well. It's a thrill when they mention places that I've been too. And the interesting facts. I didn't know that Monsieur Eiffel was the engineer on the Statue of Liberty.

I've only been once and it was about 12 years ago and part of a very big round-the-world trip, so although I have fond memories (epecially of Notre Dame and the Louvre) it was one stop in a long list of amazing places

Up to chapter 17

I felt so sorry for Amelie. Her parents (view spoiler)

Kristen Benevides | 13 comments I've never had an interest to visit France, but since reading this book, I'd love to go. I'm on chapter 7, enjoyed reading the story of Jacob and his daughter Naomi, curious to see how their characters play out.
