Michele Hi Daphne,
Great challenge! I have two books that I want to check to make sure they would be acceptable.
1. For option 1-a curious mind by Neal Thompson (it's genre on the main page list biography but also a memoir. ) he died in 1949.
2. Will H is for Hawk work for option 6-the last genre listed on the main page is science.
Thanks, Mimi Michele

Ellen (missellen82) | 216 comments Do these work?

#3 The English Governess at the Siamese Court The True Story Behind 'The King and I' by Anna Harriette Leonowens 1870
#4 A Day in the Life of Ancient Rome by Alberto Angela or Roman Britain Life In An Imperial Province by Keith Branigan
#6 What If? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions by Randall Munroe or Zero The Biography of a Dangerous Idea by Charles Seife

Kristen (kristenia) | 1119 comments Thanks for making me wander outside of my comfort zone...that is why I LOVE the SRC! Now, I just need to find time to get to these and I need to double-check that these work. Mostly concerned about the biography as it's not his whole life, but does include biography as a main genre.

#1 The Last Days of Richard III by John Ashdown-Hill (d. 1485)
#2 The Seven Daughters of Eve The Science That Reveals Our Genetic Ancestry by Bryan Sykes (#117 on Popular Archaeology and Paleoanthropology)
#5 In the Heart of the Sea The Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex by Nathaniel Philbrick (XDOG or XWOLF)

Absolutely. It's specifically about Harrison with other tangential stories as pertains to him from what I remember. "

Cool. Thanks! I've been wanting to read this one for a long time.

Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair's construction, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor."

A biography about Just BUrnham or just Holmes would work. This one is way down there on books for me btw. It barely counts as an actual history book because Larson spend 75% of the book making up conversations by all the major players and imagining events that he made up that might have happened. It's a dreadful history book when it comes to facts."

LOL that makes sense - it did strike me as weird how often Larson was able to tell me about the women's thoughts at the time of their deaths!

How about Lafayette in the Somewhat United States (died 1834) for 1, instead?

Also for 6: Come as You Are: The Surprising New Science that Will Transform Your Sex Life

Thanks!

Those all work. Even the Richard III one. Biography can be a short or long section of a life. I don't think they have the distinction between types like self-written ones do. (Autobiography for entire life and memoir for a specific section).

Yikes, I don't know where I came up with all of those mistakes.

Both will work. I've been sitting on a couple other books by Larson that I haven't picked up either because his making up of conversations and events was so off putting in The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America.

The last one would also work for option 6 if you wanted. It has XWOLF in the title/sub. :)

Ahh, cool. Yes, that one will absolutely work. I have that one too in audio that I've been looking forward to listening to. You should let me know what you think of it when it's done, so I know if I should move it up my pile or not.

I do read some non-fiction from time to time BUT am kind of burnt out on it right now because I had to read so much of it while in school working on my BS degree LOL so I try to steer clear of it as much as possible when I am reading for pleasure LOL I am just lurking here to see if something shows up that catches my interest. I found one already that was approved.......:)

Here's another one for approval as biography, NOT Biography Memoir or Biography>Autobiography, as it's shown on the main page - Benjamin Franklin: An American Life by Walter Isaacson.

Since Ben Franklin died in 1790, and this was published in 2003, I doubt it's an autobiography or memoir, even if Ben is impersonating Walter Isaacson!

Thanks!

Yup, that one works for option 1 for sure. I don't understand some people and their shelves. :)

I haven't read this one, but my mother adores Franklin, and I've had several GR friends read it and they all gave 4 or 5 stars. Should be good. :)

FYI...I finished The Invaders: How Humans and Their Dogs Drove Neanderthals to Extinction today...I don't read tons of non-fiction educational type books (usually more autobiography/memoirs). This was one pretty interesting, even thought at times I got really lost! I'm sure you'd get it a lot more as this seems more like a book you may read....it got pretty technical at times talking about various things that I got lost it. But the overall concept and theories were pretty interesting!

Can I use Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President for Option 1. It is about both James A. Garfield and the man who killed him and is tagged Biography.

Garfield died in 1881. Charles Guiteau died in 1882.
