Betsy | 348 comments SYNOPSIS:

Amir is the son of a wealthy Kabul merchant, a member of the ruling caste of Pashtuns. Hassan, his servant and constant companion, is a Hazara, a despised and impoverished caste. Their uncommon bond is torn by Amir's choice to abandon his friend amidst the increasing ethnic, religious, and political tensions of the dying years of the Afghan monarchy, wrenching them far apart. But so strong is the bond between the two boys that Amir journeys back to a distant world, to try to right past wrongs against the only true friend he ever had.

The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father’s servant, The Kite Runner is a beautifully crafted novel set in a country that is in the process of being destroyed. It is about the power of reading, the price of betrayal, and the possibility of redemption; and an exploration of the power of fathers over sons—their love, their sacrifices, their lies.

A sweeping story of family, love, and friendship told against the devastating backdrop of the history of Afghanistan over the last thirty years, The Kite Runner is an unusual and powerful novel that has become a beloved, one-of-a-kind classic.

I started it on Friday, and I'm to chapter 5 or 6 now, I think. I can tell already that it's one of those books where I might like the story... but there's too much violence and I'm not liking the main characters, who sling shot walnuts at the neighboring dog. :( That kid definitely has a "mean streak", I hope he gets better as an adult!

Happy Reading,
rift

Sara (saraboulos) | 1 comments I just finished the novel several hours ago. It took me two days to finish this book, that's pretty much because I couldn't leave it without knowing what was going to happen at the end.

Sara, wow: 2 days! It's definitely a page turner for me as well (tho I can't read quite so fast as you!) and I'm not sure why since I still don't particularly like the main character.

Betsy | 348 comments I might be able to get to this one later in the month or December. If not, it will in 2016.

Betsy | 348 comments I finally am reading this one. Love your comments, Rift.

I am through chapter 9.

Betsy | 348 comments Finished this book a few days ago. I was not sure what I expected. I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this book. Certainly was an emotional one for me. I found the book well-written and engaging. This was the first book I read by this author. Intrigued in reading something else. I gave the book 5 stars.
