Yun Yi Hi,
I just finished this book in kindle version and I like to buy a hard copy. I found out there is a version called "unabridged" one. Anyone know the difference? I also read wiki and it says that this book first published as a "censored" "serialised" version in a newspaper. Is the current unabridged version really original and complete as Hardy's original presented?
Thanks!

P.S. this is really a powerful classic!

Well, at first the only abridged versions I could locate were audio, but then I found this quote from Amazon, similar to what you found:

"Tess of the d'Urbervilles: A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented is a novel by Thomas Hardy. It initially appeared in a censored and serialised version, published by the British illustrated newspaper The Graphic in 1891 and in book form in 1892. Though now considered a major nineteenth century English novel, Tess of the d'Ubervilles received mixed reviews when it first appeared, in part because it challenged the sexual mores of late Victorian England."

So it was originally censored. And there are lots of editions. If it were me, I'd go for the Oxford Classic, with Juliet Grindle, editor. It looks the most helpful. I adored the book, and read the Modern Library edition, no intro, no notes, no nuttin'. I probably could have used the help.

Good question, because I've been thinking about rereading it myself, and now I know what do buy! Thanks!

Thans Ellen for your suggestion.
Yes, the first time publication in newspaper was censored, but (I don't remember where I read that) after that, Hardy got chance to publish it in book, so it seems that he added back whatever was censored by newspaper. If that's true, all (or at least most) the later versions are supposed to be quite original. But, the kindle version I just finished is completely "platonic", no sexual descriptions at all. If this is Hardy's original text I see no reason it should be censored. I don't even know if Angel and Tess had sex or not during those several days of "fulfillment" as fugitives. I guess they did. Tess sounds absolutely content before her arrest.

Thanks again for recommendation. I guess I will run book store to check it out.
