Sarah | 18550 comments Great toppler as always j'mom. It was however my personal worst performance - I didn't even manage to finding she one book. RL got in the way big time. Looks like everyone else got some reading in, some more than others.

message 102: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Although I didn't dust off any of the books I have at home, I did read a couple of really good books I've had on my TBR list for a while. And I have one of those 1200 page books at home glaring at me a lot. I should just give the darn thing away!

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Another really enjoyable toppler. Thank you for thinking up these fun events, JMom.

I was able to read 8 books this time. My personal best to date. Only ONE was actually on my tbr list I think, but they were mostly some really good reads :)

message 104: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60166 comments I'm wondering.. with Jack and Jackaby, can they connect at "jack"? J'mom?? Or are they only allowed to connect at one letter?

message 105: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I wonder what our topplers do to the GR statistics for books read, especially ones like this where everyone was going for Q and Z book titles and all of the other single letter titles? It would be fun to see the list of all of the team's titles side by side to see the overlap in titles. You have kept me entertained this week reading all of your posts.

Well done all of you who participated and those who had personal bests on books read. Your team struggles to add titles to the grids and find which titles make the most points has me on the edge of my chair waiting to see the results.

message 106: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments It has been entertaining, I agree, Cherie.

Excellent Toppler! Sounds like we all had a great time, (I know I certainly did!).

message 108: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19369 comments Janice - Team 1 got called out for trying that. Lol. J'mom said no overlapping. Sorry.

message 109: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments Thanks for a awesome Toppler Jmom!!!

Janice (jamasc) | 60166 comments Kristie wrote: "Janice - Team 1 got called out for trying that. Lol. J'mom said no overlapping. Sorry."

I thought they were building on words - like adding an "s" to Queen. But you may be right. I haven't followed other teams' progresses all that closely this time around.

message 111: by Casceil (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments My impression was that adding to words (like adding as "s" to make queens) was only allowed if someone read a book with "queens" as the first word. Random collisions that made words were only legal if the resulting words represented titles someone actually read. In a real game of scrabble, if one person played the word "jack," and if "jackaby" were a legal word, I believe a second person could turn "jack" into "jackaby." But I have not played all that much scrabble. Obviously, it is Jmom's call.

message 112: by Kristie, Moderator (last edited Oct 25, 2015 09:27AM) (new)

Kristie | 19369 comments Janice - Oh, maybe you're right. I thought the call was that they could only intersect and not overlap. I think the queen / queens example was the one used, but we also had other words such as zoo & zoobiquity that could have overlapped. Let's see what J'mom says.

Casceil - The discussion came up because you are allowed to do that in real scrabble. But, we weren't sure if it was allowed in toppler scrabble. :)

message 113: by Almeta (last edited Oct 25, 2015 10:35AM) (new)

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11496 comments I think that the only overlap allowed is the "only one time single letter title".☻

message 114: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60166 comments Yeah, you might be right Almeta.

@Kristie & Casceil, regular rules don't apply (usually) because we're playing YLTO's twisted version. :)

message 115: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments BTW, just to boast about my sister, Almeta, you should all check out all the skeleton memes in her group's reporting thread (One Tile Ahead). She put in a meme for every person's report and in most cases the meme ties in with the book's name or description. She always takes loads of time to make the topplers fun like this, squirreling away memes way ahead of time. OK, I'll stop bragging now!

Are you asking if you can add ABY to an existing JACK? Sorry, but no.

It always amazes me how she comes up with all her graphics. They're something I look forward to every Toppler!

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments And she keeps track of what everyone is reading, and reads a lot of books herself. I just bury my head in my books and hardly come up for a comment here and there!

I wasn't as present either, but it's because I was rarely reading at home anyways... between the elections and a couple of days away from home, I didn't have much time to post and I mostly read at night (reading way too late at night LOL)

Well, I would word it differently by saying that the two titles, Jack and Jackaby, connect at the J, A, C, & K. I know, I know... semantics. One can only try, and try again. (view spoiler)

Almeta is amazing! I always marvel at what she comes up with. And on top of it all, she reads mega books.

I wasn't sure which way you were asking about, so I started a little confused. But that only works for a little while - then Queen Meanie steps in to take care of any pests! No neck wringing needed. ☺ ☺

lol!

Your comments remind me of August in the year that we were all reading only books with Orange covers.

I speculated that the bookstores started buying only orange books and that the publishers changed their presses. AND then the trend abruptly stopped in September.

message 128: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Oh, I remember that orange phase! That rainbow challenge was fun and I read a lot of books I wouldn't have normally read. I read a non-fiction book about the color indigo, just so I'd have another indigo rainbow color to report. It was quite interesting, actually.

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Sarah, I wanted to say I'm sorry RL got in the way of you enjoying this toppler. I hope everything is working out well.

message 130: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) | 6542 comments Marie, we have our off days/weeks. I didn't really participate that much in this toppler as far as chatting/posting goes. I read a couple of books I could have done without, but they gave our team more points as they began with Q and X. Anyway, don't analyze things too much. Hugs!

Thanks Debra. It was a mix bag of a week but things are starting to settle down now.

Sarah | 18550 comments Marie wrote: "have we had the results?"

I'm guessing teams are still finalising their scrabble boards. Also the bonus tiles haven't been announced yet so that will change things somewhat.

message 134: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19228 comments I was laughing about the orange thing in this toppler as well. I got all excited as I read two orange books! Then i realised we did the rainbow 3 years ago and I should now get over it.

Marie, I think we had until tonight US time to submit our boards, and then Jmom will do bonus points. So probably a couple more days :)

message 135: by jaxnsmom (last edited Oct 27, 2015 01:52PM) (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments I think I gave teams until 9 pm EDT (or 11, I'll have to look it up) to submit their final boards. Then the fruit machine will pick the bonus tiles. Everyone cross your fingers, rub your lucky rabbit's foot, do your special dance - whatever it takes - and hope you have lucky tiles!

At work so I can't do any graphics.

The orange book covers got me interested in GoodReads and YLTO because Amy was reading The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon and she started telling me about the challenge. I read the book too and later started on the Rainbow Challenge (I still cannot look at book covers without thinking about it). I did not get my first badge until October. I love that beautiful harvest moon that I got from Rusalka!
