D. Richards (dmanningrichardscom) Hello Aussies and Aussie wannabes,

I’m addressed in Goodreads as “D.” but prefer David. D. Manning Richards is my writing name because there are already two published David Richards authors. I was very pleased when I learned recently from an Aussie friend that there is your Aussie Readers group.

My wife Judy and I are USA citizens who immigrated to Australia in 1973, so we could legally work there. We had around-the-world Pan Am tickets and traveled for six months before arriving in Sydney. I worked for the architectural firm Peddle Thorp & Walker in the AMP Building on the Circular Quay, and Judy worked for the economics department of The Bank of New South Wales on Martin Place. We loved Sydney and our Aussie friends. In late 1975, we continued our travels for seven months and settled in Washington DC. In 2000 we returned to Sydney for the Summer Olympics and stayed for three years again. This time to research the history of the city and Australia. In January 2012, we returned to promote my first Sydney historical novel, in a three-book series, released July 1, 2012, and to complete the second novel that came out October 1, 2014. We then left Sydney to travel for five months before settling in St. Germain, Paris, France, where I am writing a historical novel PARIS IN RUINS: A Novel of Passion and the French Résistance (about love and valor during the “Battle for Paris” in 1944). We intend to return to live in Sydney, our second home, for at least three years to complete the third novel in the series.

There’s everything anyone would ever want to know about me on www.dmanningrichards.com and on my Goodreads and Amazon author pages. The truth is that I’m a terrible marketer and not much interested in it. It took me four years to find you, my main audience, so that gives you some indication. But I’ve found that self-publishers have to be marketers if they want to have their novels read, and of course, that’s why most of us write, right?

I’ve joined LibraryThing.com because I can give away ebooks, which is easier to do than giving away paperbooks on Goodreads. I’m considering giving away ten ebooks of the first novel DESTINY IN SYDNEY. I would appreciate any thoughts you may have on such giveaways. I will write in Authors Spotlight to announce the giveaway and provide a link if I can figure out how to do it.

I’ve been reading your interesting exchanges since I joined Aussie Readers on September 10. I’m usually a pretty private person, but I will probably be drawn into giving my thoughts on some of the fascinating books and topics you discuss in the future. We’ll see.

Thank you for this opportunity to join your Aussie Goodreads group.
David

I find self publishers need to market themselves as much as their novel. Which is probably hard if your a private person.

Destiny in Sydney: An Epic Novel of Convicts, Aborigines, and Chinese Embroiled in the Birth of Sydney, Australia

Gift of Sydney: An Epic Novel of the Struggle to Forge the Multicultural, World-Class City of Sydney, Australia

David you could do it a few ways...but the Giveaways thread (which I gave you a link to) is a good way. You could do it via Rafflecopter (a lot of authors do that) or you could just say (in here or the Giveaways thread) "the first 10 people to email (private message on Goodreads) you will receive the ebooks".

Thanks, Veronica. As a city planner, I'm amazed that Sydney continues to make the right decisions to be a more enchanting city with each visit. Like Sydneysiders, I don't care much for "big noters," so I'm not comfortable with self-promotion.

OK, Brenda, I want to reach Aussie Readers, so may I here and now offer five ebooks of the first novel in the series, DESTINY IN SYDNEY, in either mobi (Kindle) or epub formats to the first five Aussie Readers who request them? I will still try out a LibraryThing giveaway later.
