I agree about Ling having a possible love interest in Wae-Mai. Or it could just be that she is so completely lonely? In this time period, young girls often held hands / kissed as a sign of friendship so I was unsure if it was that or more.

And Blind Bill... oh so creepy. I really don't like that sneaky little sucker.

Evie aggrevates me too, but I like your observation that she is 'normalised' a little with Sam. I found her much easier to cope with in this book, and I'm not sure I like her, but I don't dislike her now either.
