I watched the Emerald City last night on HULU. In one word....Incredible! This is definitely not your Grandmothers Wizard of OZ. Here's the link to the trailer.....

Lára | 479 comments I'm quite sick of snow already, wish we could have some other weather. Haven't read a single new book this year, but have reread couple of my favorites. I'm pretty sure I woldn't feel guilty about it last year but I don't care now :D Not sure what's changed but I feel more relaxed than before and less things concern me

We can switch places, if you want. You take the sun and I'll take the snow :D It's super hot here and it's just the beginning of summer.

I'm with you Ria, I much prefer a nice book in front of the fire in comparison to a blazing hot beach read! 😞

Well, I Guess I shouldn't say I just got back from Cancun, Mexico. Where it was 85, with a cool ocean breeze, crystal blue Caribbean water and a nice frozen margarita sitting on the stand next to my very comfortable lounge chair and a great big umbrella over my head. I was able to almost finish all of Fortress Draconis. Now don't get me wrong, a snowy day before a roaring fire is also a great place for a good read.

I was thinking of the FBC when I sipped on my frozen margarita.

message 276: by Ria (new)

Ria (ban1chka) Completely different topic but I've been thinking about this for some time - what's your opinion on translations? Do you pay attention to the original language in which a book was written and if you speak more than one language, would you rather read the book in its original language or in your native tongue?

Femmy | 166 comments Ria wrote: "what's your opinion on translations? Do you pay attention to the original language in which a book was written and if you speak more than one language, would you rather read the book in its original language or in your native tongue?"

I speak Indonesian (my native language) and English and I always try to read books in these languages in the original. But then I'm so familiar with English so reading it doesn't feel like reading a foreign language.

I think translations are great, allowing me to read books from languages I don't know. I read books translated from Arabic (books on Islam), Chinese (wuxia novels), and Japanese (manga). Sophie's World is Norwegian and The Alchemist is Portuguese. However, I haven't read any translated fantasy. I'd suppose the original language wouldn't matter to me, as long as the story's good.

message 279: by Margret (new)

Margret Ha! I was going to mention if we could page you Femmy, but glad you had already replied :)

The only translated works I've read were the Witcher series. I DNF'ed but not for the translated quality, which I thought was great. It just didn't hold my interest as much as I'd liked

message 280: by Femmy (new)

Femmy | 166 comments By the way, I'm a translator myself :-)

I've translated some fantasy works into Indonesian, including Stardust, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, and the first three books of the Dark Tower (translating those riddles in The Waste Lands was sure a challenge!).

Oh, that's really cool!

I'm Bulgarian myself and there doesn't seem to be many fantasy books translated into Bulgarian. At least not as many as I'd like. It is my personal opinion that books should be read, if possible, in the original language or to a language that is close to it (for example, I would read a Russian book in Bulgarian, but a German one in English). It makes all the difference in the world. But perhaps I feel so strongly about this because I have had terrible experiences with translations.

I feel like there's not enough fantasy being read, especially in smaller countries (I exclude YA fantasy, because YA is EVERYWHERE these days) and one of the main reasons is that most fantasy seems to be written in English and if there's no one to translate it, then few people will read it. But if few people read it, no one would want to translate it, so it's this vicious cycle. I'm so happy that there are translators like you, Femmy, who make it possible for people who don't speak English well enough (or at all) to discover the awesomeness that is this genre :)

Lára | 479 comments My friend rescued a crow but she's never in the same place for more than 4 months, and she wants me (as always) to take care of the animal after she leaves (she does the same thing every year so now I have a house full of animals). I wouldn't really have any problem with it last year but now it's a different situation, so I'm worried about the crow since I can't take it. The animal seems to be doing really fine right now (her wing was broken) and might be able to fly soon and I really hope it's going to happen.

I don't want for my friend to change tho, I really like her the was she is :)

Out of curiosity, how does that work? Does the publisher approach you, or is there some other way to do it?

message 284: by Femmy (new)

Femmy | 166 comments The publishers usually have a list of freelance translators to whom they can commission translation work. I'm on such a list for two large Indonesian publishers and the editors know I'm a fan of fantasy, so they commission the translation of some of their fantasy novels to me.

message 285: by Margret (new)

Margret That is so cool and I bet it's really difficult, especially to capture the varying humor from language to language

message 286: by Femmy (new)

Femmy | 166 comments Yeah, anything that's culturally loaded or involves word play is challenging and requires some creative thinking. But it's soooo satisfying when you hit upon a suitable solution.

Ria (ban1chka) Hey, guys! A Bulgarian team is making an epic fantasy animation series based on Bulgarian/Balkan mythology. I just watched the short story they've released and got super hyped all over again (I've known about this project for quite a while), so I figured I should share.
This is the trailer for the series - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReHr1...
And this is the short story - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjFHl...
The first episode is expected to be released towards the end of this year. Hope you like it as much as I did ^^

Lára | 479 comments It's been a very long time since I've enjoyed a book so much that even after about 12h later I still can't think about anything else. The Privilege of the Sword is just ... amazing. I feel a bit broken to be honest and I cannot read another book right now, just can't.

message 292: by Lára (last edited Jul 14, 2017 05:30PM) (new)

Lára | 479 comments About two years ago I planted various lilies in containers on my balcony (I don´t have a land I can plant to, so I do it in my apartment and balcony), and only the white ones came out this year (x). I´ve been quite a handful for some people in general (x), I believe but I just have to say that I´m so in love with nature at this point. I don´t know whether is the person I´m living with or my beautiful job or the rare books I read but I´m just so happy :)

I´m about to visit my grandma tomorrow and I´m not thrilled about leaving my room but I´m gonna do it, even tho it´s the only thing this year that I do not want to do.

x - I´m still playing Lord of the Rings Online and it's a 10 year old MMORPG and I´m late but we have a Mordor expansion coming soon and I´m just happy. This game's focus is on the book (yeah, there are three parts to Lord of the Rings but it´s actually just one split into 3, talking about book(s) not movies). I started playing as a hunter but I've made a lore-master (male as that), followed by minstrel (if anyone has read Beren and Luthien, or The Silmarillion, will know about it) and a champion that I oddly enjoy more than I should. I played some MMORPGS before and I always chose a melee class since I see myself as a melee person but in this game it´s really not about the class at all. There´s so much lore in it that I completely lose myself in it. And when I´m in (edit: the real) world I´m lost thinking about Ellen Kushner's Riverside world.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 1494 comments Lára, I'm in a one room myself, with a garden in my window.

Started a fish tank along with it. Part of my healing process, I hope.

I'm not into games, tgey become too distracting and I have enough trouble concentrating on books.

message 297: by Lára (last edited Jul 17, 2017 01:51PM) (new)

Lára | 479 comments :D

if only it is watching and nothing else. Aquarium pets require more than just space and water. It needs to be a special prepared water and you need an adequate space.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 1494 comments 10 years is a good time for a beta.

Mine is freshwater. No special water... just tap. There is an additive to cut out the chlorine. I have lice plants, so am dealing with algae, but this is meant to be a project for me.
