Was it his practice outside the home that bolstered his higher view of himself? Of course, her discovery of his bloody clothes would have cost him his perfect crime if she reported him to the authorities.I don't know how much of himself he'd invested in his academic work and reputation. If he'd gotten away with his target crime, would he have just stopped killing?
I think her finding the bloody clothes, invading his private space sent him into a blind rage. Caught me off guard.
I was flabbergasted when he took that bag from his car to his room, knowing how his mother was. Having said this, I hadn't expected her to be quite so nosy and invading a grown man's room while he slept.
Yes. One wonders why Gene stayed at his mother's house under those circumstances. He made lots of bad choices, too.

He killed her because she was a threat to his plans.
