I've followed Maise Dobbs and like, not love, the series. I read each as it comes out.

message 902: by Jill (last edited Nov 07, 2022 05:57AM) (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments I have read the first three. I thought the series started well, but I must have lost interest. Maybe I should try the next one.

Yes, I think I lost interest too. Too many series, it's overwhelming sometimes and I can work out how much I like an author by whehter I am up date with their books or not!

I tried the first Maisie Dobbs book and decided the series wasn't for me. As you say, Susan, so many series!

message 905: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments Does anyone know much about Ann Perry?

message 906: by Roman Clodia (new)

Roman Clodia Sounds like Maise Dobbs isn't that strong a series then as some of you have given up.

I read quite a few Ann Perrys when I was younger. I liked both series she has going, both set in Victorian times, with strong historical narratives. They can get a bit samey if read close together and I just jumped in with whatever I could get from the library so haven't read them in order. Some of them are quite dark.

message 907: by Jill (new)

Jill (dogbotsmum) | 2687 comments Oops that should have been Anne Perry

message 908: by Rosina (new)

Rosina (rosinarowantree) | 1135 comments If we are looking for non-Golden Age series, can I throw in a word for the Roman Art Series, by Iain Pears, starting with The Raphael Affair. Seven books in the series, with humour, and lots of information about art.

A series I reread whenever I feel in need of intelligent comfort.

Ooh, I'd love that-I've enjoyed some of his other books and have started collecting these mysteries on the "some day I'd like to read these" basis so this would be great for tackling my tbr pile!

message 910: by Rosina (new)

Rosina (rosinarowantree) | 1135 comments We just need to round up another reader or two ...

I am interested in the Iain Pears series.

I have read all of Anne Perry's Monk series and am trying to work my way thru her Pitt series. As said, the books are very similiar so need to be widely spaced.

I would like to try the Bryant and May series by Christopher Fowler. The first is Full Dark House and is the only one I've read. I think I heard the series has recently wrapped up.

I'm starting the Matthew Shardlake Dissolution series again, but those are 600 pages!

I have The Raphael Affair. I'd join a read.

message 914: by Rosina (new)

Rosina (rosinarowantree) | 1135 comments There seems to be interest in Iain Pears' series, so perhaps we could read it starting next year ... March/April would suit me (a year after I last read it.)

OK, I will add the first to the list.

FYI, in the US, The Anonymous Venetian by Donna Leon (Brunetti #3), seems to be Dressed for Death. Wish they wouldn't do that!

Absolutely this! However, I know my library will get a book eventually, so I put in a hold and wait - demand means I often don’t read the latest in a popular series like The Thursday Murder Lub for months! But I definitely love the series, just have to wait my turn…I’m trying not to accumulate too many more physical books, as my usual places to donate haven’t started accepting again after the pandemic!

Have you tried Shardlake on audio? Excellent narration by Stephen Crossley but it is 16 hours!

I love Shardlake. I'd happily do a buddy read of those, even if we spread them out because of length. Wasn't overwhelmed with Fingerpost, so less sure about the Pears ones.

It is a series set in the reign of Henry VIII, with a lead character who is a hunch-backed lawyer. The first one is Dissolution.

I did for the last book, to listen as I read the paperback I ordered (Lamentation). It was a doorstop!

Susan in NC (susanncreader) | 5048 comments Susan wrote: "Sounds good, Michaela. Let's see what others reading schedules are like."

I’d definitely be in for a Shardlake reread - they were long, but excellent! I know my library has them, and I bought the last book as I didn’t want to wait for my library (popular titles take a while to get to your hold spot, unless you get in front of the queue.)

I agree, a winter read seems appropriate, but I’m flexible, I’ll make room for Shardlake!

Hey Michaela, Susan in NC here - I don’t know if Scribd is available in Austria, but I’ve been able to get all the Aird books on it as part of my monthly subscription.

Frances (francesab) | 647 comments I ended up buying it as part of the 2nd Chronicles of Calleshire collection through my iBooks for about $24 canadian (which is about $19 US). This includes the next 3 books in the series.

Amazon in the UK does have The Calleshire Chronicles Volume Two: A Late Phoenix, His Burial Too, and Slight Mourning which Frances mentioned, for £15.19, which is still expensive.

Sorry Michaela, not much use to you for this read, but just in case it is any help to anyone for future reads, I've also bought a few of this series as old paperbacks via Ebay.

I had a look, and it does appear to be available on Open Library, an internet library which I think you can join for free and download books from there. I don't actually use it, but Iots of people who do love it. https://openlibrary.org/books/OL26341...

message 950: by Michaela (new)

Michaela | 542 comments Thanks Tania, sounds fantastic!

I liked the first two in the series, but the third not so much, so will have a look whether I like the forth, so will perhaps then buy the volume of three.
