I've read a book with that story. Could it be a Dean Koontz by chance? I'm looking at his books. I found one that could be it. Midnight I'm not 100% sure I have the right one, but I think it could be it. The blurb doesn't say much and wiki doesn't make any mention of computer.

No, that doesn't look like it. It looks like Midnight is more about beasts hunting people down based on it's wikipedia page.
yeah but if I remember right, what changes the people is their computers. You only learn it towards the end. Some turn into beasts while for others, the wires connect to their brain. Again, I'm not entirely sure about the title so you may be right. I've read so many Koonts 20+ years ago, that when I read the blurbs, they end up all sounding the same to me. :/

There were neither beasts nor wires in the book I'm looking for. :-)

I only remember a few scenes. There was one scene where a family was in a car and then there was an impending car crash - the family kids (that had previously been infected) saved everyone by pulling on the hand brake and turning the wheel while the adult driver screamed and panicked. Near the end of the book the main protagonist that had been fighting the nanites the entire time goes for a walk and finally gives in and let them take over his mind/body.
I think I read this in the late 80s or early 90s, though it may have been more recent. I'm not even sure what to search for since nanite wasn't a word used often, if at all, back then.
It takes place in our modern day world. It is not Blood Music or Prey.
